I'm planning a trip to Athens and though I'm excited, I'm also trying to be mindful of my budget. The charm of historical sites like the Acropolis, the Plaka district, and experiencing the vibrant Greek culture is something I cannot put a price tag on. However, I am looking for ways to stretch my euros further while enjoying what Athens has to offer.

Does anyone have tips or personal experiences to share on saving money while traveling in Athens?

I have some insider tips about Athens. These are things that I recommend:
  1. Discover Hidden Anafiotika: Tucked away under the Acropolis, the Anafiotika neighborhood offers an island-like charm right in the heart of Athens. Stroll through its narrow streets adorned with white-washed houses and blooming bougainvillea for a quick escape to the Greek islands. I've poked around here, it's charming.
  2. Explore Local Markets: For an authentic taste of Greek life, visit the bustling markets of Athens. The Varvakeios Market on Athinas Street is a feast for the senses, offering everything from fresh produce to traditional Greek spices and cheeses. Don’t miss out on the nearby specialty shops known for their olives, nuts, and dried fruits. The neighborhood markets are definitely a delight. They have everything!
  3. Enjoy Sunset at Mount Lycabettus: While the Acropolis gets most of the attention, Mount Lycabettus offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, especially at sunset. The summit can be reached by a funicular, but a hike up the hill promises a rewarding experience. SO beautiful!

Taking the Ferry to Mykonos?

I am planning a trip for Greece next year to Greece. I usually fly into Athens and then fly into a place like Santorini or Mykonos from there.

I plan to go to Mykonos next summer and I am kind of sick of flying.

Is the ferry situation easy from Piraeus? Is this a better option than airplanes?

Someone told me I could wait until the last minute and buy the tickets that day, but I am not sure I feel comfortable with that...

  • Sunset at Lycabettus Hill: Watching the sunset from Lycabettus Hill offers panoramic views of the city and the Aegean Sea. It's a magical experience, especially when accompanied by live music at the hilltop chapel.
  • Monastiraki Flea Market: Bargain hunting at Monastiraki Flea Market is a must-do in Athens. You can find everything from antiques and handmade crafts to clothing and jewelry.

Most touristy areas in Athens?

I’m planning a trip to Athens and I want to make sure I get to experience the most iconic and touristy areas the city has to offer. While I’m all for off-the-beaten-path adventures, I also believe that some places are popular for good reasons, and I’d hate to miss out on those.

Could anyone share their recommendations for must-visit tourist spots in Athens? I’ve heard the Acropolis is a no-brainer, but I’m curious about other places as well. Also, if there are any tips for navigating these areas (best times to visit, ticket hacks, etc.), I’d greatly appreciate it!

Churches to visit for Liturgy in Athens

I'll be in Athens soon, and I would like to go to church! I am trying to find a church that has liturgy that is preferably by my hotel. I am staying in the Plaka.
