Rio Summer Olympics Greek Athlete Recap for August 15, 2016

(Greece) – The close of day 10 of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics was a successful one for the Greek Olympic team with Eleftherios Petrounas’ gold medal finish in the men’s rings gymnastics event. This was Greece’s fifth gold medal in gymnastics since the start of the Modern Olympic Games in 1896. This brings Greece’s total medal count at the 2016 Summer Olympics to be three. Anna Korakaki won both a gold medal and a bronze medal in two shooting events at the games.

Greek athletes also participated in some of the swimming events. Kalliope Araouzou finished in 11th place in the women’s 10 kilometer marathon swimming event. Greek swimmers E. Papazoglou and E. Platanioti finished with a rank of 11 in the preliminaries for the women’s synchronized swimming event. They’ll compete in the final round on Day 11.

There was also a lot of activity amongst Greek athletes in track & field. Konstadinos Flippidis finished in 7th pace in the pole vault final. Konstadinos Douvalidis finished with a rank of 6 in round 1 of the hurdles. Hrisoula Anagnostoupoulou finished with a rank of 26 in qualifications of the women’s discus throw. Maria Belibasaki finished with a rank of 37 in the women’s 200 meter.

The men’s water polo team is in the water finals. They will play Italy on Day 11 and the winner of that game will make it to the semifinal round. There are also plenty of upcoming track and field events that Greek athletes are participating in, as well as men’s marathon swimming 10 kilometer swim, which will have its final round on Day 11. Greece is also still in the running for a few of the sailing events that are still to come.

The Greek Olympic Team has 92 athletes competing in this year’s Summer Olympic Games. Although the team is smaller than it had been in previous years, the athletes are eager to compete in their events.
