Where can I rent bikes in Athens?

Athens isn't really bike friendly. Traffic is excessive, roads are narrow and there are limited sidewalks in many areas. I saay that as someone from Chicago, which is a very bikeable city. The most biking I have seen is outside Athens along the coast. Most of the people I see are experienced...

Why arent the old Olympic stadiums being used for anything?

That's the track & field stadium, where the Olympic flame and opening/closing ceremonies were held. It's a bit out of the way for me, so I haven't seen it in awhile. It's a beautiful stadium from what I remember from seeing events at the Olympics.

Tips for taking taxis in Athens!

Depending on where you are going and the number of bags you have, there is both the Tram and a bus that you can use from the airport. We are in Alimos near the water and the express bus works great, and its only 6 euro. There is a ticket station at the airport on the far end of the B side.

Tips for taking taxis in Athens!

We have both Uber and TaxiBeat downloaded to our phones. Per our discussions with some cab drivers, Uber is a better deal for them. But use them both, because you have better bet on securing a taxi. DO NOT get a cab from the port, as the meter is always "broken" and they will rip you off...

What is the one dance that you must know for a Greek wedding?

The most popular in the US is Kalamatiano. When my daughter got married in the G.O.C in Chicago, many in the wedding party and on the grooms side were not familiar with Greek traditions. She decided to have a casual rehearsal dinner in the church gym with the bridal party, their significant...

Monastiraki and Plaka are the best areas of Athens hands down!

I actually will go to shop at several great stores that feature local artists in Plaka, but unless I need tourist trinkets there is very little there I want or need. And Athens has much better eating venues than plaka. Check out the Bib Gormand lists that have unique restaurants that offer...

What time of the year is the best to visit Athens?

My favorite is mid-May through mid-June. Weather is great, but not too hot. Beaches and tourist locations are less crowded because kids are not out of school yet.

Why arent the old Olympic stadiums being used for anything?

I’m pretty sure most are. The soccer stadium is used by Olympiacos and the peace and Love stadium is used by Panathenacos soccer. Basketball is used by Olympiacos (I think), martial arts stadium and swimming are in use. All the venues at the old airport Elliniko have been raised to make way for...

Why do Greeks usually only marry Greeks?

I think this is a bigger deal in the US. My husband had many Greek Americans try and convince him not to marry me. They could introduce him to a nice Greek girl. Relatives in Greece were extremely welcoming and we have cousins and friends there that are married to non-Greeks. 33 years later we...

Has anyone gotten baptized as an adult?

Yes, both my son-in-law and I got baptized in the G.O.C. It was full out dunking for me, similar to the scene in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. When our kids were born, we knew we wanted to raise them Christian but we’re unsure of which church to commit to. After several discussions with different...

    What does malakas really mean?

When the high school boys hit the beach, I often tease my nephew and say “the malakas brothers were all at the beach today.”
