That was my only time, went there specifically to do spearfishing in the pristine waters there. Not very touristy back then, Skiathos is better known, all the islands in the Sporades group are nice I believe. We go to Greece very often though.

If you flew from abroad it has to be Thessaloniki. Kavala airport is a small regional airport and to my knowledge you can't fly direct to any European cities . If you flew from Athens it could be either. It is an easy drive from Thessaloniki, motorway all the way.

Either Thessaloniki or Kavala then took a ferry from Karamoti to Thassos . About 2 hours drive from Thessaloniki to Karamoti . Short drive (10 minutes) from Kavala airport to Karamoti. It is a long time since I went but I think about 1.5 hours on the ferry.

You can rent an auto in Greece, most car companies have them but they cost a little more. Even the Greeks buy automatics these days, they were scared of them a few years ago.

Poros is ok then on the northern part but don't expect to find sand on the beach, it is all pebble of varying sizes but not overly busy. I would suggest Skala a much better option, again pebble beach but much smaller pebbles, the beach is much busier, more upmarket places to stay and lots more...

If you are asking me which is nicer to stay at, they are both busy commercial ports. Poros would be slightly better because at least half of the beach on the northern side of the river ( creek in summer) is away from the busy port. In my opinion it is much nicer to stay in Skala or Agia Efimia...

To me, about the same as most islands besides the well known very touristy islands, like Mykonos, Santorini etc... Lots of nice tavernas every where you go but don't expect to find 5 star Hotels. Of course everything is more expensive summer months then again who wants to go there in winter.

You have to be in USA, that's what happens when you are 7-8 hours behind. I'm the opposite to you 7-8 hours ahead so I don't get jetlag going there, I get it when I come back home.
