Hey everyone! I’m heading to Kefalonia soon and really want to hike Mount Ainos while I’m there. Has anyone done it recently? I’d love to know what to expect in terms of trail conditions, difficulty, and how long it takes to reach the summit. I’ve read that there are a few different trails—any recommendations for the most scenic or manageable one?

Also, is it possible to hike from the base, or do most people drive partway up and start from the national park entrance? I’m going in the summer—should I be worried about heat or lack of shade on the trail?

Bonus question: did anyone spot the wild horses? I’ve heard about them and would be thrilled to catch a glimpse.

I hiked Mount Ainos last summer and it was incredible! The Digaleto–Megas Soros trail is the most popular. It’s about 6.5 km round trip and moderately challenging, but the views from the summit are absolutely worth it. Most people drive up to the national park entrance or the transmitter station and hike from there. Starting at the base would be a long, steep trek.

The trail is well-marked and goes through beautiful fir forests, which offer some shade—but definitely bring water and start early to beat the heat. As for the wild horses, they do exist! I didn’t see them myself, but others in my group caught a glimpse. Keep your eyes open and your camera ready!

Tips for Visiting Drogarati Cave

I’d love to hear your tips for visiting Drogarati Cave. I’ve loved Greece my whole life, I’m Greek, and somehow I’ve never made it to these caves, which feels almost unbelievable to admit. I’m finally starting to plan a trip to Kefalonia, and Drogarati is high on my list.

I’m curious about the practical side as much as the experience itself. Is it best to go early in the day or later? How strenuous is the walk and the stairs, and is it manageable if you want to take your time? I’ve also heard the acoustics are incredible, especially when concerts are held there. Does that change how you experience the space?

Any advice on what to expect, what surprised you, or how to make the visit feel meaningful rather than rushed would be appreciated. I’d love to experience it with the right mindset.

Historical sites to visit in Kefalonia?

I’m planning a trip to Kefalonia soon, and this time I want to focus more on history rather than beaches or food (though I’ll probably end up enjoying those too!). I’ve been to Greece many times, but never to Kefalonia, and I keep hearing that the island has a fascinating mix of Venetian, Byzantine, and even WWII history.

I already know about the St. Gerasimos Monastery and the earthquake that reshaped much of the island in 1953, but I’d love to discover more places that tell Kefalonia’s story. Are there any ancient ruins, castles, or historical museums worth seeing?

I’ve heard bits about the Assos Castle and the Venetian fortress of Agios Georgios near Argostoli, are they still accessible and worth the hike?

Any recommendations for must-see historical or cultural sites would be really appreciated!

Can you let me know some tips for a first-timer to Kefalonia?

I might go to Kefalonia next year, and I'd love to hear some advice from people who have visited the island before. I've been looking into the different areas, but I'm having trouble deciding where to stay and what to prioritize.

I've heard wonderful things about places like Assos, Fiskardo, Argostoli, and Myrtos Beach. I'm also interested in exploring some of the smaller villages, trying traditional Kefalonian food, and finding beautiful places that might not be on every tourist's itinerary.

Would you recommend staying in one location for the entire trip, or splitting the time between different parts of the island? Is renting a car necessary to really explore?

I'd also love to know how many days you think are ideal for a first visit. What are the things you absolutely wouldn't miss, and what advice would you give a first-timer?

Fiskardo vs. Assos: Which Do You Prefer?

I'm considering a trip to Kefalonia sometime in the future and am still in the information-gathering stage. One comparison that keeps coming up is Fiskardo versus Assos. Both look absolutely beautiful in photos, but they seem to have very different personalities.

Fiskardo appears to be larger, with more restaurants, boats, and activity, while Assos looks quieter and perhaps a little more traditional. Since I haven't finalized any plans yet, I'm curious what people who have visited think.

If you had to choose one, which would it be and why? Is one better for relaxing and enjoying the scenery? Does one have better food, beaches, or overall atmosphere? Would you stay overnight in either location, or are they better as day trips?

Info About Petani Beach on Kefalonia?

I’m planning a trip to Kefalonia this summer and have been looking into Petani Beach. From photos, it looks incredible, the cliffs, the water color, and the whole setting seem really dramatic, almost like a quieter version of Myrtos.

I’m curious what it’s actually like in peak summer though. Does it get very crowded, or is it still possible to enjoy it without feeling packed in? I’ve also heard the drive down is pretty steep and winding, was it manageable or a bit stressful?

Another thing I’m wondering about is the water. I’ve read that it can get deep quickly and sometimes has waves, did that impact swimming at all?
