For Ancient Greeks, Our Modern Democracy is an Oligarchy.

Interesting that anarchy gets only one fleeting mention in the article. The reality is that ancient Greek (Athenian) democracy is more akin to anarchy. Another ancient word that needs to be broken down to better understand its true meaning. An-archos - without authority - meaning direct...

    Public Transportation System in Athens

You can get to the Plaka/Monastiraki touristy areas from Piraeus with the Metro. It's a great way to get around in Athens. Trains leave every 5mins so you just go to the platform and get the next train. You can get single trip, daily or weekly tickets. If you are going to be around for a while...

Best way to get to Ikaria?

I believe even if you catch the ferry out of Rafina the trip is still a long one. However, the ferry stops at Andros, Tinos and Mykonos on the way to Ikaria so you can stop over and have a day or two rest before continuing on to Ikaria. Next time I will stop over at Mykonos (don't hate me)...

Prove the mythological gods do not exist

I was lucky enough one year to have my room upgraded at the Royal Olympic Hotel to a massive room with a view to the temple of Olympian Zeus. Every morning I would wake up and open my curtain to this view (also, small tip, go to google maps and hover your cursor over the icon of the temple of...

    Favorite Sunsets in Athens?

Lykavittos is also a popular sunset spot in Athens. Gets very busy with tourists at sunset time though so you might have to get there a bit earlier to secure a good location to take photos. Another little known location which I think gives a good view of both Lykavittos and the Acropolis is...

What do Greeks eat for breakfast?

The breakfast of champions: Yoghurt with walnuts and honey (or just honey). It is yummy!!! All washed down with a Greek coffee of course!

3 months in Greece - help please

Do some searching yourself for properties where you are interested. I think there are plenty of opportunities in Peloponissos but there are also lots of nice places in the north of Greece too. Depends what you like. Here is an example of what you could do in Peloponissos. I would stay in...

Best way to get to Ikaria?

I went to Ikaria last year. I flew out of Athens to Ikaria. Flights are frequent and easy to book online. The ferry trip was just too long. The other way to do it (and probably what I will do next time I go to Ikaria) is to take the ferry and island hop there with 1 or two stops along the way...

Do I need a driving test to rent a car?

Not sure where you are from, but I do know that I don't need an "International Driver's License" any more as my Australian Driver's license is sufficient. Might also be the case for a US and Canadian driver's license.

    Visiting Monemvasia from Kythira?

This is what I would do. Make it an enjoyable journey. Hire a car in Athens and drive to Palaia Epidavros where you can have lunch and go to the nearby beach to swim/snorkel amongst the ancient ruins. Then go to Nafplio for the evening for dinner and stay overnight. The next day you can climb up...

Can you take rental cars onto ferries?

You can take rental cars on ferries but you need to know the number plate of the car. So you need to rent the car first, then book the ferry tickets. If you are only going to one island, you are probably better off renting a car on the island. Yes, it will be more expensive but you save on the...

Prove the mythological gods do not exist

I bet you these people can answer your questions. They look like they are setting up for an ancient ceremony. This was snapped on Filopapou hill on a full moon day.

Other Places to Visit Besides Kythira?

I don't know how easy these places are to get to from Kythera but I have been to Elafonisos island nearby. You can visit Παραλία Φράγκος Also, if you are thinking of Peloponisos, you have to go to the medieval fortress of Μονεμβασιά

Samaria Gorge - Do I need to hike the whole thing?

I've done this walk a few times and can say that the gorge becomes more interesting towards half way through to the end of the walk. So, if you are starting at the "land" end then you do have to do the whole walk. If you start at the beach end you probably have to still walk half way up and half...

How long to spend in Athens?

I'm biased. I spend months in Athens. So 2 weeks in Athens is fine. Lots of amazing suburbs to visit and lots of events on. Theatre, music, open air cinemas, restaurants, etc, etc. You will always have something to do. Check out the Epidavros festival for amazing events around Athens.

    Hiking in Athens on Vacation

There are many hills to climb in Athens. Lykavittos is the most famous and many people go in the evening to catch the sunset - if you can find the room amongst the crowds. I usually climb up early in the morning when there is hardly anyone up there and the views of Athens are unobstructed...

Great Neighborhoods to Visit in Athens?

@Jolui Great suggestions! The only thing I could add is Microlimano where one can eat fresh fish right on the water. It's close to the Piraeus port. @paharo45 If you want to know where to go in Exarcheia, check out my post here: A Guide to Exarcheia

Eating off the beaten track traveling in Greece?

The quick answer to this is to get out of Plaka/Monastiraki/Psirri and head to a less touristy area. Exarcheia is my favourite suburb and although it is becoming more touristy, it still maintains some good traditional restaurants. Here is my guide to Exarcheia: Exarcheia Guide Another good...

Ikaria is one of the Blue Zones

Not every restaurant is great. Stick to the traditional ones and you will be rewarded. We stayed in Armenistis and we drove up the mountain a little (10mins I think) and there we found Τα μπακαλιαρακια της Αθηνας The food was amazing. Very unique too.
