Greek yoghurt is one of the most versatile ingredients when I'm cooking. It can be substituted anytime you have a recipe that requires cream cheese or cream. It's one of my favourite substitute because I've been on a diet lately and watching my calories. These are some of my favorite recipes that use Greek yogurt!

Greek yogurt cake
Green goddess dressing with Greek yogurt
Mango lassi with Greek yogurt instead of milk/kefir
Tzatziki
Frozen yogurt

I am always looking for ways to use Greek yogurt in cooking. I often buy a big tub of yogurt, and then don't eat it fast enough. I make a delicious Greek yogurt cake perfumed with orange zest, and then I top it with an orange glaze (I mix fresh orange juice with confectioners' sugar and spoon it over the cake). You can use any yogurt cake recipe, but then just add the zest of one orange to it.
 

New Greek Food Trends?

I’ve been curious lately about whether food trends show up in Greece the same way they do in the U.S. and other countries. Here, it feels like there’s always a new wave, fusion concepts, ingredient obsessions, reinterpretations of older dishes, or even whole eating styles that come and go.

When I think of Greece, I tend to picture the cuisine as more fixed and stable, rooted in tradition and everyday habits. But I’m starting to wonder if that’s an incomplete picture. Are there noticeable trends happening now, either in restaurants or home cooking? Things like lighter versions of classic dishes, new ingredient pairings, regional foods becoming more popular, or influences from travel and immigration?

I’d love to hear from people who live in Greece or visit often. Does food culture shift there over time, or does it resist trend cycles more than other places? And for those outside Greece, have you noticed changes in how Greek food is presented or cooked compared to earlier years?

Favorite Greek Seafood Dishes?

Living near the coast has always shaped how I think about Greek food, and seafood is one area where the range feels especially deep. Beyond the familiar fried calamari or grilled octopus, there are so many dishes that feel tied to specific places, seasons, and habits around the table.

I’m curious what Greek seafood dishes stand out most for others. Are there particular fish preparations you seek out when you’re in Greece, or meals you associate with islands or seaside towns? Do you prefer simple grilled fish with olive oil and lemon, or more involved dishes like psarosoupa, shrimp saganaki, or baked fish with vegetables?

I’m also interested in whether your favorites come from restaurant meals or home cooking. Some of the most memorable seafood I’ve had has been very straightforward, eaten slowly, with little more than bread and wine on the table. I’d love to hear which dishes you return to, and whether there’s a specific place or memory attached to them.

Did your family use beef or lamb in Greek dishes?

My family cooked according to what was available. So, it was mostly beef - even though I preferred lamb for the most part. This used to bother me, because I wondered if I had missed out on something essential in Greek cooking. Then I realized, the constant in Greek cooking is to use the freshest ingredients. Lamb that had to come to the United States from New Zealand wasn't always the best choice!

So, in retrospect, I don't mind it. I feel blessed I learned that essential lesson early. That Greek cooking is all about preserving the freshness of the food and adapting when you needed to. How about you? Did your family use beef, lamb, something else?

What traditional Greek foods do you still make regularly?

As food trends come and go, I’m curious which traditional Greek dishes people still make on a regular basis at home. Not the special-occasion or holiday foods, but the meals that truly stayed part of everyday life.

For me, it’s the simple things, such as dishes that don’t require much planning, fancy ingredients, or a long list of steps. The kind of food you can make almost automatically, because you’ve watched it come together a hundred times before. Those are the recipes that seem to carry the strongest connection to memory and family.

I’d love to hear what’s still in your rotation. Are there dishes you cook weekly without even thinking about them? Have some foods faded out over time while others stuck around? And if you’re cooking outside Greece, did availability change what you kept making?

Greek Dishes Common in Restaurants?

When people think of Greek food, the same handful of dishes seem to show up on restaurant menus again and again — moussaka, souvlaki, spanakopita, horiatiki, maybe pastitsio. They’re all good, but they don’t always feel like the full picture of Greek cooking.

I’m curious what others think about the gap between restaurant Greek food and what’s actually cooked at home or in smaller local tavernas. Are there dishes you see everywhere in restaurants that Greeks don’t really eat that often? On the flip side, what are some everyday or regional dishes that rarely make it onto menus?

I’ve noticed that many restaurant dishes are heavier, more standardized, and designed to be familiar, especially for visitors. But some of the most memorable meals I’ve had in Greece were incredibly simple and not something I could easily “order” elsewhere.
