I’ll be spending some time in Chania soon and would love recommendations for the best swimming beaches nearby. I’ve read about Elafonissi and Balos, but they both seem like day trips rather than places you can just wander to for a morning swim. I’m curious if there are any great beaches closer to town, something with clear water, easy access, and maybe a little taverna or café nearby for lunch afterward.

Some people mention Agii Apostoli or Chrissi Akti as local favorites, but I’d love to hear real experiences. Are they calm enough for relaxed swimming, or are there better spots just outside the city? I’m not looking for nightlife, just a beautiful, clean place to swim and unwind for a few hours. Bonus points if there’s shade or fewer crowds. What’s your go-to beach around Chania for a perfect swim?

If you’re staying in Chania and want a beautiful swim without committing to a full-day excursion, you’ll be happy to hear there are several great beaches just minutes from town. Agii Apostoli is my personal favorite, the coves are naturally protected, so the water stays calm and clear even on windy days. It has that perfect mix of easy access, gentle waves, and a couple of relaxed cafés nearby where you can grab lunch without feeling like you’re in a tourist zone.

Chrissi Akti is another solid option. It’s slightly more open, but the water is still very clean, and you can usually find a quieter corner if you walk a bit. Locals go there before or after work, which says a lot.

If you don’t mind going a touch farther, Kalamaki and Iguana Beach are also lovely, with good swimming conditions and some natural shade. For a morning swim near Chania, Agii Apostoli wins for me every time.

Near Chania, you'll find excellent beaches such as Agii Apostoli, Marathi, and Seitan Limania, depending on what you're looking for. Having your own rental car makes it easy to explore multiple beaches in one day. Cretarent is a great option for convenient island travel.

Favorite Sunset Spot on Crete

I’m starting to seriously consider a trip to Crete this July, mostly because I’ve become really intrigued by the food culture there. If I go, I’ll probably spend a few weeks exploring different parts of the island rather than rushing around.

One thing I’d really love to experience while I’m there is a truly memorable sunset. I know Crete is large and has so many landscapes, so I’m curious where people have seen the most beautiful evening views. I’m open to anything, whether it’s a famous viewpoint, a quiet beach, a hilltop village, or even a restaurant terrace with an amazing atmosphere.

Do you have a favorite sunset spot on Crete that really stood out to you?

Information Balos Lagoon?

I’m thinking about visiting Crete this year, and Balos Lagoon keeps coming up as one of the top spots to see. The photos look incredible, but I’m trying to get a more realistic sense of what the experience is actually like.

For those of you who’ve been, is it as stunning in person as it looks online? I’ve also heard getting there can be a bit of a trek—either by boat or a rough drive plus a hike. How difficult is it really? Of all the times I have visited Crete, I've never been. It's truly amazing how much there is to see there.

Information About Balos Lagoon?

I'm hoping to visit Crete again in the near future, and one place that keeps coming up in my research is Balos Lagoon. I've never been. The photos look absolutely incredible, but I'd love to hear from people who have actually been there rather than just reading travel guides.

Is Balos Lagoon really as beautiful as everyone says? What's the best way to get there—by boat or by driving and hiking down? If you drove, was the road difficult or manageable with a rental car? I'm also wondering what time of day is best to visit to avoid the biggest crowds.

Any tips on what to bring, how much time to plan for, or things you wish you had known before your visit would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to hear your experiences before I finalize my itinerary!

How much can you realistically see in Heraklion during a six-hour cruise stop?

I'm looking at a cruise that I might take next year, and one of the stops is Heraklion, Crete. I've never been there before, so I'm starting to research what there is to see and do. It looks like there are quite a few interesting options, but I'm wondering how much is realistic with only about six hours in port.

I'd love to visit the Palace of Knossos, but I'm also interested in exploring Heraklion itself, especially the Venetian Harbor, local shops, and maybe stopping somewhere for a traditional Cretan meal.

For anyone who has visited Heraklion on a cruise, how much were you able to fit into your day? Is it possible to see Knossos and still have time to explore the city, or would that feel too rushed?

I'm also wondering how much time to allow for transportation and getting back to the ship. Any advice would be appreciated!

How Many Days Do You Really Need in Crete?

I'm considering spending a few weeks in Greece this October, and I'm trying to decide how much of that time I should devote to Crete. I've never really explored the island properly, and the more I look into it, the more I realize how much there is to see.

Would you spend two or even three weeks just exploring Crete, or would that feel like too much time? I'm also considering dividing the trip between Crete, Athens, and perhaps another island.

Since it will be October, I'm wondering if staying longer in Crete might make sense rather than moving around too much, especially as the season winds down on some islands.

For those who know Crete well, how many days would you recommend to experience it without rushing? And if you had a few weeks in Greece in October, how would you divide your time?
