Can you use different kinds of ground meat in Makaronia me Kima? I usually have only had it (outside of Greece) with beef. I've had it in Greece and it tastes different a little bit... is it possible it is a different meat? It didn't quite taste like lamb.

At home, can I use different meats? I don't always want to eat beef, but that is the easiest to find. I tried making it with ground turkey once and that was a disaster.

It was most likely ground beef. I have heard that pork mixed with beef gives it a better flavor, so it could have been that. Contrary to what people believe, Greeks don't eat lamb very often (it's mostly on Pascha and that's it).

Everything in Greece tastes different, which is why it's hard to replicate a recipe that will have the exact same taste that you experienced in Greece.

Stick with beef, make sure the ground beef you use has over 20% fat (that is what will flavour the entire thing). If you feel more fat is needed, use butter not olive oil. Be generous with Black pepper, oregano and or Rosemary (whichever you prefer and use).

Thank you both for chiming in. This is great advice. You guys are right, everything tastes different in Greece! I will definitely stick to beef. I ended up trying lamb and it tasted off.

I would definitely make this with beef - I don't think lamb would taste right!

Fresh tomatoes in fasolakia?

I need help figuring something out.

Whenever I make Fasolakia, I usually use some sort of a canned tomato product like sauce, paste, or even diced or crushed tomatoes.

I have a bunch of fresh tomatoes I want to use this time instead and I have never done this before. Any advice?

Food Tour of Greece?

I want to take a food tour of Greece, and I only really have time for one destination. Where do you suggest I go? Some possibilities:

- Stay in Athens the whole time
- Crete
- Ikaria
- Thessaloniki

Really, any place in Greece would be good I imagine! Is there a site that has actual guided tours? I know I could just go somewhere and eat and explore on my own, but I want to meet locals, maybe even cook with some people.

Are there pumpkins in Greek cooking?

I have some pumpkins I want to cook with... I would love to experiment with using it in a Greek dish.

I know there is a type of pita that involves pumpkin. I have a recipe somewhere, so I do plan to try that.

Is there anything else you guys can think of? There has to be more!

Greek Dishes with Almonds

I remember driving through Crete that there were a ton of almond trees. Yet, when I think of nuts that are used in Greek cooking, I automatically think of walnuts.

Do Greeks cook with a lot of almonds or does it depend on the region? What do they typically do with them? I know you can use almonds in baklava...

List of Greek Coffee Drinks

I heard that Greeks have different coffee drinks from what we have. Question - can you go to a cafe and also get some of the coffee drinks we are used to, like a cappuccino or espresso?

Anyway, what are the popular coffee drinks of Greece?

  • Greek coffee made in that little pot
  • Freddo
  • Frappe
