You can get to the Plaka/Monastiraki touristy areas from Piraeus with the Metro. It's a great way to get around in Athens. Trains leave every 5mins so you just go to the platform and get the next train. You can get single trip, daily or weekly tickets. If you are going to be around for a while (5+ days) a weekly ticket is the best way to go.
For anything more out of the way, you can use the buses. Eg you can get to Vouliagmeni by bus but not metro or tram. It takes a lot longer though but enjoy the journey - it will be an adventure!

It's pretty reliable from what I can tell and the trains run on a regular schedule (on time). It's a great way to get around to the main areas.

I'm planning a trip to Athens and though I'm excited, I'm also trying to be mindful of my budget. The charm of historical sites like the Acropolis, the Plaka district, and experiencing the vibrant Greek culture is something I cannot put a price tag on. However, I am looking for ways to stretch my euros further while enjoying what Athens has to offer.
