Spinalonga, Crete has the most interesting past!

I visited Spinalonga a few years back after one of my cousins recommended I visit while on my trip to Crete. Since the time of Venetian rule on thie island and up until 1957, this island is where those who suffered with leprosy were quarantined. Now, many people visit for the wildlife and of course to see where this history came from.

The tiny island of Spinalonga is off of the eastern side of the island in Mirabello bay. Close to Elounda

I was en route to Agios Nikolaos to stay in the resort area for a few nights, and that is when I caught a glimpse of this historic island. I have never visited, though. Its past is a bit sad (it used to be an island where lepers were sent, to isolate them from the regular population).
