I have never been to Mount Lycabettus, although I've been to Athens a handful of times - it just never came up to go here.

Here are some questions I have:

A few specific questions I have include:
  • What's the best time of day to visit Mount Lycabettus? Is it good at sunset?
  • Are there any hiking trails that you'd recommend?
  • How difficult is the trek up the hill? Is it suitable for beginners or those not used to hiking?
  • Is the funicular railway worth the ride, or is it better to walk?
  • Are there any facilities (like cafes or restrooms) available at the top or along the way?
  • Do you have any safety tips or things to watch out for?
Thanks in advance!

Sunset gets very busy at the top of Lycabettus - I avoid it. I go early mornings where you can get a great view of the whole of Athens. The first time I went, I took the funicular but really it is more fun walking up as you have great views along the way and the funicular does not let you see the Athens views. It is an easy trek although you have to pick the time of day as it gets hot during the day - take water with you! There is a great café along the way, Prasini Tenta which is great to sit and have a coffee and enjoy the views. It is pricey though but just like having a coffee on the caldera on Santorini is more about he experience and the views rather than the coffee, you will pay for it. Also there is a restaurant at the top which doesn't have great food to be honest although last time I went was many years ago - it may have improved. As for restroom facilities, I believe the restaurant at the top may have them as well as the café I mentioned. If you are worried about safety when hiking, you can stay away from the dirt paths and walk up the road and use the concrete walkway to get up to the top. Alternatively, you can take a taxi up to the walkway and just walk up that to shorten your walk.

Hopefully I have answered all your questions but if you have any more, feel free to post them here.

Excellent advice, Vangelis! I heard similar things about Lycvabettus - especially during peak season. Thank you so much for the cafe recommendation! This is good stuff.

I haven't personally been to Lycabettus, but someday I think I might try ... maybe only if I go during an off peak time - I don't think dealing with the crowds would be Wirth it.

How walkable is Athens?

I’m thinking about visiting Athens this year and trying to figure out how easy it is to get around on foot. I usually prefer walking when I travel, especially in cities where you can explore neighborhoods naturally without relying too much on transportation.

How walkable is Athens overall? Are the main areas like Plaka, Monastiraki, and the Acropolis close enough to each other to comfortably walk between them, or is it more spread out than it looks?

I’m also wondering where it makes the most sense to stay if I want to rely mostly on walking. Would it still be worth using the metro, or even renting a car, or is that unnecessary for a short trip?

Best Places for Sunset in Athens?

I realized recently that even though I visit Athens about once a year, I’ve never actually paid attention to the sunset there. I don’t have a trip planned at the moment, I’m just gathering ideas for the future, but now I’m curious about the best places in the city to watch the sun go down.

Are there classic spots locals love? I’ve heard of Lycabettus Hill and some rooftop bars, but I’m sure there are lesser-known viewpoints, coastal areas, or even neighborhood corners that offer beautiful light in the evening. I’d also love to know if certain places are better at different times of year or if the atmosphere changes depending on whether you’re in the center or closer to the Athens Riviera.

If you had to recommend your favorite places for a memorable sunset in Athens, where would you send someone who’s finally ready to pay attention?

Any must-try dessert spots in Athens?

I might be heading to Athens this summer, and I’ve already started making a mental list of all the food I want to try—but I feel like desserts deserve their own plan.

I know about some of the classics like loukoumades and baklava, but I’d love to hear about specific spots that are really worth going out of the way for. Whether it’s a traditional pastry shop, a place known for one standout dessert, or even something more modern, I’m open to all of it.

Also curious if there are any places that are especially good in the summer, something refreshing, lighter, or just perfect after a long day walking around the city.
Would love any recommendations or favorites you’ve found!

What to Do on Cruise Stop in Athens (Piraeus)?

I’ve got a cruise stop coming up in Piraeus with about five hours, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to spend it.

I’ve been to Athens quite a few times and have already done most of the major sights, so I’m not looking to rush back to the Acropolis of Athens or museums again.

I’m more interested in something different this time, maybe a great local area to wander, a good food spot, or even something closer to the port that still feels worth it.

Is it better to stay around Piraeus and explore there, or head into a specific neighborhood in Athens for a quick, focused experience?

Is Kolonaki worth visiting?

I'm planning another trip to Athens and keep hearing good things about Kolonaki. I've walked through Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma several times over the years, but I've never really spent much time exploring Kolonaki.

For those who have visited, is it worth adding to my itinerary? I've heard it's a more upscale neighborhood with great cafés, restaurants, shopping, and a different atmosphere than the more tourist-focused areas. I'm wondering if it's the kind of place where you can spend a relaxed afternoon wandering around or if it's mainly for luxury shopping.

If you recommend visiting, what shouldn't I miss? I'd love suggestions for cafés, bakeries, restaurants, viewpoints, or any hidden gems nearby. I'd also be interested in hearing what makes Kolonaki stand out compared to other neighborhoods in Athens.
