I have a one night layover at Eleftherios Venizelos airport, where should I stay that's nearby? :)

For a one night layover, I would highly recommend the Athens airport Hilton. It is not your typical Greek boutique hotel that you might find in other areas of Athens, but for a 1 night layover it should do the trick. It is right across the street from the Athens metro/subway which is modern and clean and a great way to get to the popular areas of Athens.

Definitely the Sofitel - located right across the street. Very comfortable rooms; great pool & gym, excellent restaurant/bar. The next morning you just roll your luggage via the short walkway to the airport.

I would definitely recommend the Sofitel - you walk out of the terminal and it is across the road. We used it in March when transiting through to Kefalonia. It's not the cheapest but saves a lot of messing around and their Moussaka is damn good!!

I've heard good things about Sofitel too!

The location of this hotel is ultra convenient and it is so comfortable! You have the ability to take a taxi, etc to see the sites, and then you are right by the airport so that you can get there quickly to catch your next flight.

I always stay at Sofitel the night before I fly out of Greece because it is there, very convenient, you just walk across. I meet my rental car rep there in the evening or the next morning. I have a long flight home to Sydney and I don't want to miss my flight.
It is not cheap but clean and comfortable with double glazing you can't hear the planes . On arrival to Athens from Sydney usually a bit after 12 noon, I pick up my car at the airport and drive to Loutraki stay a couple days at the Club hotel and then go on to Kyllini.

I've never stayed at Sofitel but many of my friends have. It is truly the most convenient and will probably be worth the money if you're exhausted from traveling. Really depends on what you want to prioritize

Unique Photo Spots in Athens?

I will be traveling to Athens this year in the spring. What are some great photo spots throughout the city? Aside from what inspires me?

I have a bad habit of forgetting to take pics while away and I come back from the vacation with a random collection. This time, I want to do some advanced planning. Some of my ideas:

- Parthenon/ Acropolis - A shot with people and the Parthenon in the background
- Food photos - plenty of shots with people - and table shots - and of myself - eating the delicious food
- Monastiraki - This place is full of life - there could be some great candid shots

Do you guys have any ideas?

Best shopping in Athens?

I'm planning a trip to Athens and I'm a bit of a shopaholic. I want to make the most of my time there and experience the best shopping the city has to offer.

From what I've heard, Athens is a treasure trove of markets, boutiques, and shops - but I'd really appreciate some local or experienced insights.

Could anyone recommend:
  • The best areas for unique, local finds?
  • Any specific stores known for quality Greek goods?
  • Tips for navigating the markets?
I've only done historical things in Athens and visited friends. I have never taken the time to shop, but I will have plenty of time in Athens over the summer.

Greek Mythology Sites in Athens?

I am visiting Athens and want a feel for where to go that pertains to Greek mythology.Of course, the Acropolis is on my list, but I wish to explore other places related to gods, goddesses, heroes, and their legendary tales as well.

For those of you who have ventured on similar quests or possess knowledge about Greek mythology's physical footprints in Athens, could you recommend:
  1. Must-visit sites that are deeply connected to Greek mythology.
  2. Any lesser-known locations that offer a unique insight into the myths.
  3. Tips for making the most out of these visits (best time to go, how to avoid crowds, etc.).
  4. Any resources (books, guides, websites) that could help deepen my understanding of the myths associated with these sites.
I’m extremely excited about this trip and looking forward to your recommendations and insights! Thanks!

This is what Athens looks like today!!

Athens air unhealthy as my friends informed me!

Ancient Eleusis Archaeological Site

I have been to Athens several times, and I didn't know this place existed. Ithas caught my interest due to its rich mythology and pivotal role in ancient Greek religious life.

I understand that Eleusis was a significant center for religious practices, most notably the Eleusinian Mysteries—secret ceremonies held in honor of Demeter and Persephone. However, my knowledge barely scratches the surface, and I’m eager to learn more before my visit.

Has anyone visited it? I don't know much about it and I am trying to figure out if it is worth it. I love Ancient Greek history and mythology and this has the potential to be interesting to me on a lot of different levels.
