April 21st, 1967: Greek Junta Places Country in Shackles!

I remember seeing a tank at the Athens airport in 1973. I remember thinking that was odd but was too young to realise the full implications of what was going on in Greece. Definitely a dark time for Greece.

Falafel gyros are not traditional but theyre great for vegetarians!

Have you ever tried mushroom souvlaki? I have made them and they are amazing! I use the portobello mushrooms for a richer taste. In Athens my favourite souvlaki place is Cookoomela. https://cookoomela.gr/

Athens vs Thessaloniki, which Greek city do you prefer?

I'm biased too. Athens hands down is the most vibrant and eclectic city. But every city and town in Greece has its unique beauty. It's been a long time since I've been in Thessaloniki but I remember really enjoying it.

This Greek island has the highest life expectancy in the world!

Loved that video! In summary: Fish (high in omega 3) Fresh veggies (vitamins/minerals) Local wine (no preservatives and other chemicals) And all the food looked sensational! I could almost taste and smell it from the video!

Get Greek jewelry as a souvenir from Greece!

And if Medieval jewelry is to your taste and you are traveling around Greece, stop by Monamvasia which has some of the best examples of this style of jewelry.

Has anyone taken an evening sunset cruise in Mykonos?

I've been on a sunset cruise in Santorini. It was an amazing experience. It was a half day cruize actually so we spent the afternoon swimming in some beautiful crystal clear waters then had bbq dinner cooked on the boat by the captain as we watched the sunset and debated Greece's political and...

    Greeks have their own halloween!

Whereas "Originally, Apokries was derived from an Ancient Greek celebration dedicated to Dionysius, the Greek god of wine and revelry." according to both articles posted above. Of course, as a theological "investigator" I realised that the religion most Greeks currently follow is a foreign...

Samaria Gorge in Crete has dazzled me

At least I've proven it's doable! You should give it a go. If you're young enough you're invincible. Now I would probably need the most comfortable walking shoes. My advice though is bring a large water bottle in summer. There is water along the way but not often and it is a long walk.

Samaria Gorge in Crete has dazzled me

It's a beautiful part of the world. I've walked the gorge a few times in my much younger life and one time I was wearing flip flops (or what we Aussies like to call thongs)!

Does anyone have advice for shipwreck beach?

You can only get to this beach by boat. When you are staying in Zakinthos, you can book a boat to take you there from most of the local tour operators. Book it straight away because it might be booked out for a few days ahead depending on what time of year you go. Enjoy it, it's a unique experience!

Monastiraki and Plaka are the best areas of Athens hands down!

There are a lot of unique places in Psirri (which is just next to Monastiraki). I like the feel of the area, the streets and restaurants and the shopping is more eclectic and alternative. A few examples: Nancy's Sweet Home: The cakes here are to die for: https://www.nancysweethome.gr/ H ΩΡΑΙΑ...

Definitely when a first time visitor to Athens asks me where they should go I recommend Plaka, Monastiraki and Psirri.

What are your favorite Greek inventions?

Ok, as an engineer, especially one that is particularly interested in computers, my favourite invention is the Antikythera mechanism which is on display in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
