I’ve been to Athens a handful of times now, but oddly enough, I’ve never really brought a proper camera. Just the occasional phone snap. Next time, I want to change that — I’m going all in with my gear and planning my trip around photography, especially ancient sites.

Obviously, the Acropolis is top of the list, but I’m wondering: what are the best vantage points to capture it — especially for sunset or night shots?

Are there quieter ruins that offer amazing shots without the crowds? I’m also looking for angles that give context, like city + ruins together.

Did a photography-focused trip recently (built my Athens trip itinerary around it) and totally recommend Areopagus Hill for sunset shots — stunning light and fewer crowds. Filopappou’s great at night with city lights behind the Acropolis.

Roman Agora is super photogenic early morning, and Kerameikos is a hidden gem with moody textures. For city + ruins, Monastiraki rooftops at golden hour are perfect. You’re gonna love shooting there!

Sounds like an amazing trip in the making! For stunning Acropolis shots, Filopappou Hill is a must. It offers sweeping views of the Parthenon with Athens below, especially gorgeous at sunset. Areopagus Hill is also great for golden hour or night shots; you get the monument beautifully lit against the night sky.

For less crowded ruins, check out Kerameikos. It’s often overlooked, has a haunting beauty, and gives you a feel of ancient Athens without the chaos. Hadrian’s Library and the Roman Agora also offer great architectural shots, especially early in the morning.

If you're after context, ruins plus modern city, try Lycabettus Hill at twilight. It gives you a panoramic of the Acropolis and the city lights starting to glow.

Is Kolonaki worth visiting?

I'm planning another trip to Athens and keep hearing good things about Kolonaki. I've walked through Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma several times over the years, but I've never really spent much time exploring Kolonaki.

For those who have visited, is it worth adding to my itinerary? I've heard it's a more upscale neighborhood with great cafés, restaurants, shopping, and a different atmosphere than the more tourist-focused areas. I'm wondering if it's the kind of place where you can spend a relaxed afternoon wandering around or if it's mainly for luxury shopping.

If you recommend visiting, what shouldn't I miss? I'd love suggestions for cafés, bakeries, restaurants, viewpoints, or any hidden gems nearby. I'd also be interested in hearing what makes Kolonaki stand out compared to other neighborhoods in Athens.

Best Places for Sunset in Athens?

I realized recently that even though I visit Athens about once a year, I’ve never actually paid attention to the sunset there. I don’t have a trip planned at the moment, I’m just gathering ideas for the future, but now I’m curious about the best places in the city to watch the sun go down.

Are there classic spots locals love? I’ve heard of Lycabettus Hill and some rooftop bars, but I’m sure there are lesser-known viewpoints, coastal areas, or even neighborhood corners that offer beautiful light in the evening. I’d also love to know if certain places are better at different times of year or if the atmosphere changes depending on whether you’re in the center or closer to the Athens Riviera.

If you had to recommend your favorite places for a memorable sunset in Athens, where would you send someone who’s finally ready to pay attention?

Best Athens Restaurants with Acropolis Views?

I’ve been to Athens many times over the years, but one thing I never get tired of is a great meal paired with an Acropolis view. I’ve already been to a few of the classic spots, but for my next trip I’d love to branch out and try something new, maybe somewhere a little unexpected, or a place locals actually enjoy as much as visitors.

I’m open to anything: modern Greek, traditional tavernas, rooftop bars with small plates, or even hotels with great terraces that allow non-guests. What are your favorite restaurants in Athens with Acropolis views?

Is Anafiotika Worth Visiting?

I might be going to Athens next year, and Anafiotika is one of the places I keep seeing mentioned. It looks beautiful in photos, with the narrow lanes, whitewashed houses, flowers, and almost island-like feel right below the Acropolis.

For those who have been, is Anafiotika worth making time for during a visit to Athens? I like the idea of wandering through a quieter, more atmospheric neighborhood, especially if it feels different from the busier parts of Plaka and Monastiraki.

I’m also curious how much time you would actually need there. Is it more of a quick walk while exploring Plaka, or is it worth setting aside an hour or two?

Are there particular streets, viewpoints, little churches, cafés, or nearby stops you would recommend combining with it? And is there a best time of day to visit when it is less crowded and easier to enjoy?

Is renting a car necessary in Athens?

I’m planning to spend a few days in Athens this summer before heading off to the islands, and I’m trying to decide whether renting a car is actually necessary while I’m there.

Part of me likes the flexibility of having a car, especially if I want to explore beyond the main historic center. On the other hand, I’ve heard traffic can be intense, parking is limited, and public transportation is fairly easy to use for the major sites.

My plan is to see the Acropolis, wander neighborhoods like Plaka and Koukaki, enjoy some good food, and maybe do one day trip if time allows. After that, I’ll be taking a ferry.

For those who’ve spent a few days in Athens, did you rent a car or rely on walking, taxis, and public transport? Was having a car helpful, or more of a hassle than it was worth? I’d appreciate honest advice.
