You may have noticed in the forum that I plan to go to Crete this year, as well as other parts of Greece. I love hiking and I do plan to hike while on Crete. I also plan to spend some time in Athens and maybe one other place. Do you have any recommendations for hikes? Since I don't know where else in Greece I am going, I would like to just stick to hiking around Athens or in Crete. I do plan to do Samaria Gorge in Crete.

Now I don't know if this will help you..... Many years ago I travelled all over Crete by my car..... Crete has main highways along coast, I just looked at the map!...The older part of Crete links up with off roads from the Highway which has access to all the many many villages and beaches....I used to go off the main highways and just travel in and out of these villages..... unbelievable what hospitality you will experience..... I can remember countless times just passing a village taverna where the sweet dear lady is preparing lunch.....no menu of course !!??...... you eat what is served.... aroma of the food which lingers will direct you along, expect the filotimo in the traditional Creatan style.... yasou vrey Kumbarey!!?... welcome and stay as long as you like kinda feeling..... Hope this helps!... depends where and which part you would begin your travels..... it is a very big island!.... Don't miss out the amazing Greek nights,Knossos comes to mind...... called Elinika vradia.... Greek and Cretan dancing(they are very different as you will discover!...Creta has it's own culture and history,)......lots of loud music and abundance of food and wine....and go easy on Raki?.... called Chipuro....I will write more later on!...Good luck with your travels..... Hash, Crete is my favorite and you summed it up nicely! I have had some experiences on Crete of eating what was being served. I had too much raki in one place and they made me stand on a chair and write on the beams. The chair was rickety and I was with my family. Haha. Fun times. To those of you who don't realize, raki is served like water on Crete. They bring it over on the house. Please don't shoot it, sip up. They fill the glass when it empties so if you drink it slowly (as the Cretans do) you won't end up drinking as much. I had an early mistake about 15 years ago where I got so very sick.

Regarding hiking, I would ask around when you get to the island. The terrain is deceptive - a hike may look like it will be fine, but the heat and dryness can get you dehydrated fast. I was on the Samaria Gorge trail and someone needed to be taken out on a donkey. At least on that trail, there is a water fill-up station but I am not sure about other places.

......??I like "I had (you mean made!) an early mistake about 15 years ago where I got so very sick"
Now I continued making those mistakes for many years as I made friends there,???I am gifted as I integrated and blended very comfortably as I continue to do even today with travellers passing through our lives..... now that comes with a price to stay up all night drinking....and riffles come out at night with a few shots in the air....all good fun.. best ever place in Crete is Panormos beach ⛱️⛱️..... the Tavernas used to close the street and put out the table and chairs to dine at night.... Night jasmine flower aroma and roses....(I had added advantage as I made friends with all tavernas so I used to pop in for early lunch sampling all the dishes, later to be served for dinner of course tasting better as well!)....I miss those years very much sometimes!... Summer Island Hopping Tips - a Month in July

It’s been a while since I’ve traveled in Greece during peak season, and I’m considering spending about a month there in July. The plan is to split my time between Athens (to visit friends) and hopping to several islands. I’m excited about the energy of summer, but I’m also aware that July can be intense in terms of crowds, heat, and logistics.

For those who have done island hopping in high season, what worked well for you? Is it better to base yourself on one or two islands and take short trips, or fully move around every few days? How far in advance do you typically book ferries and accommodations in July?

I’m also curious about pacing. With a full month, I don’t want to rush, but I also want to make the most of being there. Any tips on routes, balance, or things to avoid during peak season would be really helpful.

Favorite small towns in Greece?

I realized recently that some of my favorite places in Greece haven’t actually been the major destinations everyone talks about, but smaller towns that just had a completely different atmosphere to them.

Sometimes it’s a mountain village with one main square and old stone houses, other times it’s a tiny coastal town where everyone seems to know each other and life moves slower. A few of the places I still think about most weren’t even places I had originally planned to visit.

I’m curious what small towns or villages have really stayed with people after traveling in Greece. Could be because of the scenery, the food, the people, the history, or just the overall feeling of the place.

Would love to hear everyone’s favorites, especially places that don’t always make the typical travel lists.

Is Greece easy to travel around without renting a car?

I’m trying to figure out whether it’s realistic to travel around Greece without renting a car. I’d prefer not to drive if I can avoid it, especially since I’m not familiar with the roads, parking, or driving customs there.

For those who have traveled around Greece using public transportation, how easy was it? I know there are buses, ferries, taxis, and domestic flights, but I’m wondering how practical they are once you get outside the main tourist areas. Did you ever feel limited by not having a car?

I’m also curious whether it makes sense to rely on public transportation for most of the trip and just rent a car for a day or two when needed. Are there certain types of places that are especially difficult to reach without one?

I’d love to hear from anyone who has done a Greece trip mostly or entirely without driving.

Which Greek island feels the least touristy in the summer?

I know that July and August are busy almost everywhere in Greece, especially on the more famous islands, but I’m curious about places that still feel relatively local and relaxed even during peak season.

I’m not necessarily looking for somewhere completely empty. I’d just love an island where you can still find traditional villages, local tavernas, quieter beaches, and a slower pace without feeling like the entire island is built around tourism.

Have you visited an island in the summer that still felt authentic and not overly crowded? I’d especially be interested in places where locals still seem to set the rhythm of daily life rather than visitors.

Which island would you recommend, and what made it feel less touristy to you? Was it the beaches, villages, restaurants, fewer cruise ships, or just the overall atmosphere?

Best food towns to visit in Greece?

I’ve started realizing that some of my favorite memories from Greece are connected to food more than anything else. Little tavernas, bakeries, seafood by the water, village meals that seemed simple but tasted incredible. It’s making me think that next time I go to Greece, I’d love to plan at least part of the trip around food.

I’m not fully sure yet if I’ll be going this summer, but I’ve been daydreaming about possible places to visit. What towns or regions in Greece do you think are especially great for food lovers?

I’d love recommendations for places known for traditional cooking, local specialties, seafood, baked goods, or just amazing tavernas in general. Islands, mainland towns, mountain villages — all recommendations are welcome.

Would especially love hearing about places that felt authentic and memorable rather than overly touristy.
