You may have noticed in the forum that I plan to go to Crete this year, as well as other parts of Greece. I love hiking and I do plan to hike while on Crete. I also plan to spend some time in Athens and maybe one other place. Do you have any recommendations for hikes? Since I don't know where else in Greece I am going, I would like to just stick to hiking around Athens or in Crete. I do plan to do Samaria Gorge in Crete.

Now I don't know if this will help you..... Many years ago I travelled all over Crete by my car..... Crete has main highways along coast, I just looked at the map!...The older part of Crete links up with off roads from the Highway which has access to all the many many villages and beaches....I used to go off the main highways and just travel in and out of these villages..... unbelievable what hospitality you will experience..... I can remember countless times just passing a village taverna where the sweet dear lady is preparing lunch.....no menu of course !!??...... you eat what is served.... aroma of the food which lingers will direct you along, expect the filotimo in the traditional Creatan style.... yasou vrey Kumbarey!!?... welcome and stay as long as you like kinda feeling..... Hope this helps!... depends where and which part you would begin your travels..... it is a very big island!.... Don't miss out the amazing Greek nights,Knossos comes to mind...... called Elinika vradia.... Greek and Cretan dancing(they are very different as you will discover!...Creta has it's own culture and history,)......lots of loud music and abundance of food and wine....and go easy on Raki?.... called Chipuro....I will write more later on!...Good luck with your travels..... Yasou apo mena from Thailand!

Hash, Crete is my favorite and you summed it up nicely! I have had some experiences on Crete of eating what was being served. I had too much raki in one place and they made me stand on a chair and write on the beams. The chair was rickety and I was with my family. Haha. Fun times. To those of you who don't realize, raki is served like water on Crete. They bring it over on the house. Please don't shoot it, sip up. They fill the glass when it empties so if you drink it slowly (as the Cretans do) you won't end up drinking as much. I had an early mistake about 15 years ago where I got so very sick.

Regarding hiking, I would ask around when you get to the island. The terrain is deceptive - a hike may look like it will be fine, but the heat and dryness can get you dehydrated fast. I was on the Samaria Gorge trail and someone needed to be taken out on a donkey. At least on that trail, there is a water fill-up station but I am not sure about other places.

......??I like "I had (you mean made!) an early mistake about 15 years ago where I got so very sick"
Now I continued making those mistakes for many years as I made friends there,???I am gifted as I integrated and blended very comfortably as I continue to do even today with travellers passing through our lives..... now that comes with a price to stay up all night drinking....and riffles come out at night with a few shots in the air....all good fun.. best ever place in Crete is Panormos beach ⛱️⛱️..... the Tavernas used to close the street and put out the table and chairs to dine at night.... Night jasmine flower aroma and roses....(I had added advantage as I made friends with all tavernas so I used to pop in for early lunch sampling all the dishes, later to be served for dinner of course tasting better as well!)....I miss those years very much sometimes!... Best Greek Destinations for History Lovers

I’m thinking about planning a Greece trip next year that is focused almost entirely on history, and I’d love some ideas for the best places to include.

Athens would obviously be part of the itinerary for the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, museums, and other archaeological sites. I’m also considering Delphi, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia, and maybe spending more time exploring the Peloponnese. Meteora is on my list too, although that would add a different type of historical experience.

I’m especially interested in places where you can really spend time exploring rather than just stopping briefly to see one major site.

If you were planning a history-focused trip to Greece, which destinations would you consider essential? Are there lesser-known archaeological sites, historic towns, museums, Byzantine sites, or ancient ruins that deserve more attention? I’d also love suggestions for putting together an itinerary without trying to cover too much ground.

First Time Tips to Greece

I've been fortunate enough to visit Greece quite a few times over the years, and recently a friend asked me for advice before their very first trip. It surprised me how difficult it was to answer!

Once you've traveled somewhere often, you start taking a lot of things for granted. I'm not sure what the most helpful tips would be for someone experiencing Greece for the first time.

If you were helping a first-time visitor, what advice would you give? I'm thinking about practical things, cultural etiquette, transportation, money, restaurants, pacing an itinerary, or even little things you wish someone had told you before your first visit.

What are the biggest mistakes first-time visitors make, and what are some experiences you think every newcomer should have? I'd love to pass along some advice from people with firsthand experience.

Summer Island Hopping Tips - a Month in July

It’s been a while since I’ve traveled in Greece during peak season, and I’m considering spending about a month there in July. The plan is to split my time between Athens (to visit friends) and hopping to several islands. I’m excited about the energy of summer, but I’m also aware that July can be intense in terms of crowds, heat, and logistics.

For those who have done island hopping in high season, what worked well for you? Is it better to base yourself on one or two islands and take short trips, or fully move around every few days? How far in advance do you typically book ferries and accommodations in July?

I’m also curious about pacing. With a full month, I don’t want to rush, but I also want to make the most of being there. Any tips on routes, balance, or things to avoid during peak season would be really helpful.

Why do some score tracking platforms show delayed match updates?

Been tearing my hair out lately trying to follow live matches because some score‑tracking apps update super fast while others lag like they’re stuck in another century. I’m talking minutes behind, not seconds. It’s driving me nuts, especially when I’m juggling fantasy leagues and friendly bets with my buddies. I keep switching between apps hoping one will magically work better, but no luck so far. Is this just bad servers, licensing stuff, or am I using the wrong platforms altogether? If anyone knows what actually causes these delays—or has app recommendations—I’m all ears.

Best food towns to visit in Greece?

I’ve started realizing that some of my favorite memories from Greece are connected to food more than anything else. Little tavernas, bakeries, seafood by the water, village meals that seemed simple but tasted incredible. It’s making me think that next time I go to Greece, I’d love to plan at least part of the trip around food.

I’m not fully sure yet if I’ll be going this summer, but I’ve been daydreaming about possible places to visit. What towns or regions in Greece do you think are especially great for food lovers?

I’d love recommendations for places known for traditional cooking, local specialties, seafood, baked goods, or just amazing tavernas in general. Islands, mainland towns, mountain villages — all recommendations are welcome.

Would especially love hearing about places that felt authentic and memorable rather than overly touristy.
