Churches to visit for Liturgy in Athens

I'll be in Athens soon, and I would like to go to church! I am trying to find a church that has liturgy that is preferably by my hotel. I am staying in the Plaka.

Do any pop you know if any of these are good?

Monastery of Daphni – The Monastery of Daphni is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located just outside of Athens.

Agios Nikolaos Rangavas Church – This church is located in the heart of Athens and is considered one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the city.

Metropolis Cathedral – The Metropolis Cathedral is the largest and most historic church in Athens, with a rich history that dates back over a thousand years.

The Church of the Holy Apostles – This Byzantine church dates back to the 10th century and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of Byzantine architecture in Greece.

St. Irene’s Church – St. Irene’s Church is located in the heart of Athens and is considered one of the oldest Byzantine churches in the city.

You know, I think I have been to some of these churches, but I am not 100% sure. I see a church, I walk in - and I may not process the name of it. Great list!

Day Trips from Athens Locals Love

I’ll be spending some time in Athens and would love to understand where locals actually go when they want a break from the city. I’m not looking for the standard tourist excursions, but the kinds of day trips people choose when they just need a change of scenery, fresh air, or a slower pace for an afternoon.

Are there nearby towns, coastal spots, mountains, or historical areas that Athenians return to again and again? Places that feel easy, familiar, and restorative rather than “must-see” destinations. I’m especially curious about trips that don’t require much planning or an overnight stay.

If you live in Athens or know the area well, what day trips do you personally love — and why do you keep going back?

Is it worth spending time in Athens in August?

I’m starting to plan a trip to Greece, but the only month I’m really able to travel this year is August. I know that’s peak season for a lot of the islands, but I’ve heard mixed things about Athens in August.

Some people have told me the city can feel pretty quiet because many Athenians leave for their villages or the islands during that time. Others say it’s still lively because of tourism. I’m trying to figure out whether it’s worth spending a few days there before heading to another part of Greece for a Panagia festival we want to attend.

Athens is such an important city historically and culturally that I don’t want to skip it if it’s still enjoyable. On the other hand, if a lot of places are closed or the city feels half-empty, maybe it makes more sense to focus our time elsewhere?

Any must-try dessert spots in Athens?

I might be heading to Athens this summer, and I’ve already started making a mental list of all the food I want to try—but I feel like desserts deserve their own plan.

I know about some of the classics like loukoumades and baklava, but I’d love to hear about specific spots that are really worth going out of the way for. Whether it’s a traditional pastry shop, a place known for one standout dessert, or even something more modern, I’m open to all of it.

Also curious if there are any places that are especially good in the summer, something refreshing, lighter, or just perfect after a long day walking around the city.

Which Temples Around Athens Are Worth Visiting Beyond the Parthenon?

I’ve been to the Parthenon before and absolutely loved it, but next time I’m in Athens, I’d like to go beyond the obvious. I know the city and surrounding region are full of ancient temples that don’t get as much attention, and I’d love to explore some of them.

Are there particular temples in or near Athens that stand out for their beauty, history, or atmosphere? I’ve heard the Temple of Hephaestus is remarkably well-preserved, but what about others—maybe a bit outside the city, like Sounion or Eleusis? Are any of them easy to reach by public transport or day trip?

I’m especially interested in sites that still feel powerful or peaceful to visit, without the huge crowds. Would love your recommendations for must-see temples, hidden gems, or personal favorites among Greece’s ancient sanctuaries.

Tips for bargaining in Monastiraki flea market?

I’ve been to Monastiraki flea market many times over the years, but I have to admit — I’ve never been very good at bargaining. I usually just pay whatever the seller asks, even though I know part of the fun (and the tradition!) is negotiating a little.

Since I’m Greek, I’ve watched relatives and friends haggle with ease, and they always seem to walk away with better prices and a smile. For me, I either feel awkward asking for less or I give in too quickly.

Do you have any tips for how to bargain without offending the sellers? Is there a “right” way to approach it — like starting with a certain percentage lower, or walking away and waiting for them to call you back? I’d love to hear how others handle it, especially for souvenirs, antiques, or little treasures in Monastiraki.
