The last time I was in Santorini, it was off a cruise ship. There were other cruise ships that had ported that day, so the place was a zoo. I didn't even really like it!

Does Santorini feel different if you're actually staying there at least for a few nights, or is it always that crowded?

There was a long line to the cable car, a crushing crowd at sunsets, and in some shops, I couldn't even really walk through - there were too many people! Everyone was nice though, despite that.

Santorini definitely is better once the cruise ships have left, but it’s still an incredibly popular destination. Sunset venues and the cliffs will always be “crowded” unless you go in the “off-season” - which is getting harder to identify with the attempt to make it a year-round destination. Since it’s an expensive island from the air fare to the hotel prices, I would definitely recommend several days in addition to your travel days, so that you can really appreciate all that Santorini has to offer - which is a lot! Unless you truly want a luxury hotel, I would stay in a hotel away from the cliffs. For example, the Hotel Arassana is located right next to the Cathedral - close enough, but not too close. Get up early to take a walk from Fira to Oia at sunrise to see the beauty of the Caldera without the crowds. To escape the mid-day crowds, you could also take what is a very interesting boat trip around the Caldera to the hot springs, volcano, Therasia, and Oia.

I had a feeling that once the ships leave it's a lot more relaxing! I think you're right, next time I go I will stay for at least a few days! I'll look up Hotel Arassana. Thank you so much for your thoughts.

When I was just there, my cruise ship stayed a lot longer than the rest. I am not sure why - maybe because it was smaller? I have to say that once the larger ships left, the island had a much different feel. First of all, when there, we toured around the whole island. The places that feel busiest are Oia and Fira. So, if you get away from those places, even when the ships are there, it feels a lot better. Oia was actually pretty relaxing after most of the large ships left.

Considering Pyrgos in Santorini to Stay?

I’m considering spending some time in Pyrgos during my next trip to Santorini, and I’d love to hear from people who have visited. I’ve been looking for places that feel a little different from the busier parts of the island, and Pyrgos looks like it could be a great place to explore for a few hours.

For those who have been, what did you enjoy most about Pyrgos? Are there particular streets, churches, viewpoints, shops, or places to eat that you would recommend? I’m especially interested in wandering around, taking photos, enjoying the views, and getting a feel for the village rather than rushing through a list of attractions.

How much time would you suggest spending there? Is half a day enough, or would you stay longer? I’d also love to know whether you think Pyrgos is best visited during the day or closer to sunset.

Santorini for an Anniversary Trip

A friend of mine is thinking about going to Santorini for an anniversary trip, and she asked me for suggestions. I’ve been to Santorini quite a few times over the years, but almost always as part of family trips, so my experiences there have been a little different from what she’s looking for.

She’s only been to the island once before and really loved it, so she wants to go back and make it a special anniversary trip with her husband. The problem is that I’m realizing most of my recommendations are things families tend to do, and I’m not as sure what the best ideas would be for a more romantic visit.

For those of you who have gone to Santorini as a couple, what did you enjoy most? Are there particular villages, hotels, restaurants, or experiences that felt especially romantic? I’d love to pass along some good ideas to her.

Santorini at Christmas - worth the trip?

I’ve visited Santorini before, but always during the warmer months when the island is buzzing with energy. Lately I’ve been thinking about going off-peak, specifically around Christmas, and I’m curious if anyone here has done it.

Is Santorini in winter worth it? I know many hotels, restaurants, and shops close for the season, but I’ve heard mixed things — some say it’s peaceful and magical, others say it’s too quiet and the weather can be unpredictable. I’m not expecting beach days, but I do wonder what it actually feels like to walk around Oia and Fira in December. Are there still good food options? Do any wineries stay open? Is the sea too rough for boat trips?

Best Place to Swim on Santorini?

I'm curious where people think the best place to swim on Santorini is. The island is obviously famous for its views and sunsets, but I don't hear as much discussion about the actual swimming.

I've seen recommendations for Perissa, Kamari, Red Beach, Vlychada, and even swimming from boat excursions around the caldera. They all look beautiful in photos, but I'm wondering which spot people enjoyed the most once they were actually in the water.

Do you prefer the black sand beaches, the more dramatic scenery around Red Beach, or some lesser-known location that visitors often miss? I'm also interested in places with particularly clear water, good snorkeling, or a relaxing atmosphere where you can spend several hours.

If you've been to Santorini, where was your favorite swim? Was it a beach, a hidden cove, or somewhere reached by boat? I'd love to hear your recommendations and why that spot stood out.

Is Summer Travel to Santorini Worth It?

I’ve only ever been to Santorini in May, and I absolutely loved it, the weather was perfect, and it felt busy but still manageable. Now I’m considering a trip to Greece this summer, and someone in my group is really pushing for Santorini again.

I’m a little hesitant, though. I’ve heard that in peak summer months the crowds can get pretty intense, especially in places like Oia and Fira. Part of what I loved last time was being able to actually enjoy the views without feeling packed in.

For those who have been in July or August, is it still worth it? Or does the crowd level take away from the experience? Are there ways to do Santorini in summer that still feel enjoyable, or would you recommend choosing a different island instead?
