I’ve always hoped to retire to Greece. Not sure if or how that could work now since brexit.

What has Brexit got to do with your retirement. Excuses. Just do it!!

Brexit has made me a third country national and I don’t currently meet the criteria to move there full time. If you’ve got a pile of money to give me or can find me some Greek relatives I’ll be on the first flight the day after I retire.

Laura ignore this person who is sarcastic and disrespectful,I am originally from UK and moved to Greece back in 1994.... Things were very different then,I had reciprocal DHSS and IKA benefits...
Here is the most appropriate way for you to be guided correctly for transition....
Loads of information....
Opinion:Go to visit different parts of Greece to see where you like and meet up with some people.... Different parts have their own clichés...and feel. Bigger islands like Corfu,Crete and Rhodes have more expatriates,I lived and worked in Tourism in Mykonos for many years... Good luck, for sure Greece will welcome you.... just enjoy this magnificent country and Greek food, wine music, culture, hospitality and loads of fun!..... not to mention terrific weather !... Good day from Thailand...
I have friends living in Syros,a very beautiful island who have Airbnb apartment below their villa with magnificent views of Tinos and Mykonos where we lived apart from Mykonos.

Thanks Hash. I will indeed ignore them, I’ve felt welcomed on this site and will continue to enjoy it.
Thank you for the advice. We’ll be looking to make a move in a few years, in whatever form that may be, so we’re saving hard, gathering contacts and information and enjoying our travels in the meantime in the hope of finding our home, but honestly, you could drop me anywhere where I can see the sea and I’d be happy.

You are welcome Laura,
After moving away from cold and miserable good ol'London town which I loved so very much to the seaside island,I couldn't live anywhere else but at the seaside like we do here in Thailand.... Enjoy this website, enjoy your travels to Greece, let us know how you get on or need any further, I am the lead content contributor here, haven't had time to contribute lately as I am helping out in organising and coordinating medical supplies to Eye Hospital in Ukraine...I lived as faraway as possible from any Expatriates with everyone Greek around me! Even here in Thailand we hardly have a handful of them, couldn't be better!!

How dare you ask such a question!??

Thank you. The sun is shining hard on my seaside town this week, I’m just off to the beach for a cold water dip so I can pretend I’m on the islands.
Well done to you for your Ukraine work, it‘s unbearable what these people are going through. I’ve registered to house a refugee which will be a shock to the system, the other half and I have lived by ourselves for over 20 years.

So beautiful, how do you register to do that?

How dare you give me a typical American response that you police other people's opinion and there throughs, remember your thoughts (American) aren't the only ones

There’s several organisations working on arranging placements, but I’ve also registered via the government site as hosts have to be vetted to protect refugees from trafficking etc.

That's great that they're protecting people from trafficking. My family were refugees from Turkey so I am so happy to see Greek people participating in hosting people.

Summer Island Hopping Tips - a Month in July

It’s been a while since I’ve traveled in Greece during peak season, and I’m considering spending about a month there in July. The plan is to split my time between Athens (to visit friends) and hopping to several islands. I’m excited about the energy of summer, but I’m also aware that July can be intense in terms of crowds, heat, and logistics.

For those who have done island hopping in high season, what worked well for you? Is it better to base yourself on one or two islands and take short trips, or fully move around every few days? How far in advance do you typically book ferries and accommodations in July?

I’m also curious about pacing. With a full month, I don’t want to rush, but I also want to make the most of being there. Any tips on routes, balance, or things to avoid during peak season would be really helpful.

Which Greek island feels the least touristy in the summer?

I know that July and August are busy almost everywhere in Greece, especially on the more famous islands, but I’m curious about places that still feel relatively local and relaxed even during peak season.

I’m not necessarily looking for somewhere completely empty. I’d just love an island where you can still find traditional villages, local tavernas, quieter beaches, and a slower pace without feeling like the entire island is built around tourism.

Have you visited an island in the summer that still felt authentic and not overly crowded? I’d especially be interested in places where locals still seem to set the rhythm of daily life rather than visitors.

Which island would you recommend, and what made it feel less touristy to you? Was it the beaches, villages, restaurants, fewer cruise ships, or just the overall atmosphere?

Is Island Hopping Worth the Effort?

I've been thinking about trying an island-hopping trip the next time I visit Greece, but I'm wondering if it's actually worth the extra planning and travel time. In the past I've usually picked one island and stayed there for the duration of my vacation, which has been relaxing and let me really get to know the area.

Part of me loves the idea of experiencing several islands in one trip since they each seem to have their own personality, food, scenery, and traditions. On the other hand, I wonder if constantly packing, catching ferries, and checking into new accommodations takes away from the experience.

For those of you who have island-hopped, did you feel it was worth it? How many islands did you visit, and did you wish you had spent more time in fewer places? I'd love to hear your itineraries, tips, and whether you'd do it the same way again.

Best Way to Get a Car Service to JFK Airport Before a Flight to Greece?

Hi everyone, I'm flying out of JFK next month for a trip to Greece and trying to figure out the best way to get to the airport without the usual stress. My flight leaves early in the morning, and I don't want to deal with parking for two weeks or ask a family member to drive me at 4 a.m. I've been looking into booking a car service to JFK Airport instead of a rideshare, mainly because international flights need more buffer time, and I'd rather have a proper chauffeur waiting curbside than risk a driver cancelling at the last minute with all my luggage in tow. A friend of mine recently used Blue Nile Livery for a JFK run and said her chauffeur showed up early, helped load the bags, and tracked the flight the whole way, so she suggested I try them for this trip too.
I'm still trying to figure out whether it's worth booking the chauffeur service a few days in advance or if that's overkill for a domestic pickup, whether a sedan is fine or if an SUV is smarter given how much luggage most of us end up hauling back and forth to Greece, and if anyone has had a chauffeur reroute or adjust pickup timing because of a flight delay before an international departure. For those of you who fly out of JFK often for trips back to Greece, what's worked best for you, and is there a chauffeur service you'd genuinely recommend for an early morning run like this? Any tips appreciated!

Best Greek Destinations for History Lovers

I’m thinking about planning a Greece trip next year that is focused almost entirely on history, and I’d love some ideas for the best places to include.

Athens would obviously be part of the itinerary for the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, museums, and other archaeological sites. I’m also considering Delphi, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia, and maybe spending more time exploring the Peloponnese. Meteora is on my list too, although that would add a different type of historical experience.

I’m especially interested in places where you can really spend time exploring rather than just stopping briefly to see one major site.

If you were planning a history-focused trip to Greece, which destinations would you consider essential? Are there lesser-known archaeological sites, historic towns, museums, Byzantine sites, or ancient ruins that deserve more attention? I’d also love suggestions for putting together an itinerary without trying to cover too much ground.
