Greek Fried Bread with Baking Powder?

My yiayia used to make a fried bread that wasn't made with yeast - she used baking powder - but it was firm kind of like a yeast bread.

I don't remember the exact recipe. I can't find a single recipe online that involves baking powder and not yeast. Does anyone know what this is, how to make it, and what I am talking about?

She used to call it "Greek fried dough" LOL - it wasn't loukoumades in weird shapes it was firm like the regular ladopsomo but without yeast.
 
Did it have feta on top? In our village we say kourkourtopita, but in the rest of Greece they say tiropsomo...
 
We would call it tiganopsomo, and we would eat it with ridiculous amounts of feta. I did have a cousin though who loved to sprinkle huge amounts of sugar.
 
I can see how feta would be good on it, but I was in the sugar camp. I think that's it!!!

There are some gyro shops near me in the United States and they seem to be putting a different spin on the classic dish. There are some variations. What do you guys think of the variations?

I don't recall seeing these variations in Greece, but I could be wrong. Variations such as - gyros made with different meats, like chicken, those made with Greek meatballs, souvlaki, etc.

And what do you think of putting fries in Gyros? I do see that in Greece.

Traditional Greek soups in Greece?

Most of the Greeks I know are from the United States - so it's been a few generations since a lot of them spent extended time in Greece.

From what I understand, Greek cuisine kind of changes. From what I can tell, in the United States, the most popular soup is Egg and Lemon soup (avgolemono) but in Greece, I don't see to as much or rather, hear of it as much.

I understand that Greece is just like other countries where there might be food trends, new dishes, etc to enjoy.

I'm looking to understand more about the latest trends that are currently shaping it. I'm particularly interested in how traditional Greek recipes are being reimagined by modern chefs, how regional variations are gaining popularity, or if there's a rise in any particular ingredients or cooking methods.

Is anyone here keeping tabs on contemporary movements in Greek food? Maybe you've dined at a restaurant that surprised you with a modern twist on a Greek classic, or you've come across new food blogs with innovative recipes.

Greek grilling advice and tips?

It's getting warm out and time to break out the grill! I am interested in how do Greek people in Greece grill? I've had so many delicious grilled foods in Greece, I am having a hard time getting the same flavors here in the United States.

I've tried my hand at a few recipes, aiming to capture that authentic taste, but I feel like there's a deeper level of technique and tradition that I'm just not hitting. From choosing the right ingredients to mastering the grill itself, I know there’s a wealth of subtleties that can turn a good dish into a great one.

Do they use certain marinades or techniques? I've watched people in Greece grill - they don't even really follow recipes.
