I might be going to Athens next year, and Anafiotika is one of the places I keep seeing mentioned. It looks beautiful in photos, with the narrow lanes, whitewashed houses, flowers, and almost island-like feel right below the Acropolis.

For those who have been, is Anafiotika worth making time for during a visit to Athens? I like the idea of wandering through a quieter, more atmospheric neighborhood, especially if it feels different from the busier parts of Plaka and Monastiraki.

I’m also curious how much time you would actually need there. Is it more of a quick walk while exploring Plaka, or is it worth setting aside an hour or two?

Are there particular streets, viewpoints, little churches, cafés, or nearby stops you would recommend combining with it? And is there a best time of day to visit when it is less crowded and easier to enjoy?

Anafiotika is definitely worth visiting, especially if you enjoy exploring neighborhoods with a lot of character! It's such an interesting contrast to the busier areas of Athens. The whitewashed houses and narrow pathways really do make it feel like you've wandered onto a Greek island.

I would probably plan to spend about an hour there, depending on how much you enjoy taking photos and exploring. It's not a large neighborhood, but I think part of the appeal is taking your time rather than rushing through it.

Early morning would be my preference, especially if you're hoping to avoid crowds and enjoy the atmosphere. You could easily combine it with a walk through Plaka and some time around the Acropolis.

One thing I would keep in mind is that people actually live there, so it's important to respect their privacy while exploring!

Is it worth spending time in Athens in August?

I’m starting to plan a trip to Greece, but the only month I’m really able to travel this year is August. I know that’s peak season for a lot of the islands, but I’ve heard mixed things about Athens in August.

Some people have told me the city can feel pretty quiet because many Athenians leave for their villages or the islands during that time. Others say it’s still lively because of tourism. I’m trying to figure out whether it’s worth spending a few days there before heading to another part of Greece for a Panagia festival we want to attend.

Athens is such an important city historically and culturally that I don’t want to skip it if it’s still enjoyable. On the other hand, if a lot of places are closed or the city feels half-empty, maybe it makes more sense to focus our time elsewhere?

Is Kolonaki worth visiting?

I'm planning another trip to Athens and keep hearing good things about Kolonaki. I've walked through Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma several times over the years, but I've never really spent much time exploring Kolonaki.

For those who have visited, is it worth adding to my itinerary? I've heard it's a more upscale neighborhood with great cafés, restaurants, shopping, and a different atmosphere than the more tourist-focused areas. I'm wondering if it's the kind of place where you can spend a relaxed afternoon wandering around or if it's mainly for luxury shopping.

If you recommend visiting, what shouldn't I miss? I'd love suggestions for cafés, bakeries, restaurants, viewpoints, or any hidden gems nearby. I'd also be interested in hearing what makes Kolonaki stand out compared to other neighborhoods in Athens.

Favorite day trips from Athens?

I was talking to someone recently about Athens and realized that a lot of people use it mostly as a base before heading to the islands, but there seem to be so many good day trips nearby that don’t get discussed as much.

The obvious ones like Delphi, Hydra, Nafplio, Cape Sounion, and Aegina always come up, but I’m curious which places people actually enjoyed the most once they went. Sometimes the smaller or less hyped trips end up being the most memorable.

I’m especially interested in places that are realistically doable in a single day without feeling rushed. Could be history-focused, food-focused, beach towns, mountain villages, or even somewhere mostly known for the scenery and atmosphere.

Would love to hear everyone’s favorite day trips from Athens, especially places that surprised you once you got there.

Any must-try dessert spots in Athens?

I might be heading to Athens this summer, and I’ve already started making a mental list of all the food I want to try—but I feel like desserts deserve their own plan.

I know about some of the classics like loukoumades and baklava, but I’d love to hear about specific spots that are really worth going out of the way for. Whether it’s a traditional pastry shop, a place known for one standout dessert, or even something more modern, I’m open to all of it.

Also curious if there are any places that are especially good in the summer, something refreshing, lighter, or just perfect after a long day walking around the city.
Would love any recommendations or favorites you’ve found!

Is the Temple of Olympian Zeus Worth Visiting?

I've been to Athens several times over the years, and somehow I've never actually visited the Temple of Olympian Zeus! I've seen so many of the city's ancient sites, but for whatever reason, this one has always slipped through the cracks. I'm thinking it's finally time to change that on my next trip.

I've always been fascinated by Greek mythology, especially the stories surrounding Zeus, so visiting a temple dedicated to him seems like something I would really enjoy. I've seen photos of the massive columns, and they look impressive, but I'm wondering what the experience is like in person.

For those of you who have visited, would you recommend making time to explore the site? How much time should I set aside? Is it worth going inside the archaeological area, or can you appreciate it just as much from outside?
