I’m considering a trip to Santorini and would love some firsthand insight on visiting in May.

I’m hoping for a balance between pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and a more authentic feel of the island before peak summer tourism takes over. I’ve read that May can be warm but not too hot, with flowers still in bloom and restaurants starting to fully open for the season, but I’m curious how this plays out in reality. Does the island still feel calm, or is it already busy with cruise traffic? That's my main concern.

If you’ve visited Santorini in May, I’d love to hear what stood out, both the pros and any drawbacks you noticed.

May is a very good time to visit Santorini if you want mild weather and fewer crowds. Days are usually warm enough for exploring without the summer heat, and the island still feels relaxed outside of peak cruise hours. Most restaurants and hotels are open by then. Cruise ships do arrive, but the busy periods are shorter and easier to plan around compared to summer.

Visiting Santorini in May is fine. Have in mind that Santorini is one of the most popular places in the world, so having no crowds is really impossible. And that's a good thing. Everyone has the right to enjoy such beauty at least once in their life. That said, May is nice weatherwise, fewer crowds, cruises have already started by then so do expect some cruise visitors, and great time for photos.

I’ve been to Santorini in May and it’s honestly one of the best times to see the island. The weather was warm enough for long walks and outdoor dining but never oppressive, and the light was gorgeous and great for photos. The island still felt relatively calm, especially in the mornings and evenings. You’ll notice cruise ships during the day, but it’s nothing like the peak summer crush, and it’s easy to plan around by exploring early or heading slightly off the main paths.

What stood out most to me was how alive the island felt without being overwhelmed, flowers in bloom, restaurants reopening with energy, and a more local rhythm still intact. The only real drawback is that the sea can be a bit cool for swimming, but overall, May strikes a near-perfect balance. The winds were kind of nuts, though, but this didn't affect anything.

I went to Santorini in May and it was honestly the sweet spot. Warm, sunny days without the brutal summer heat, flowers still in bloom, and the island felt lively but not overwhelmed. Yes, cruise ships come through, but crowds were very manageable — mornings and evenings were peaceful, especially outside Oia and Fira.

Most restaurants and tours were open, reservations were easy, and everything felt relaxed. The sea was a bit cool, but that was the only real downside. If you want great weather and fewer crowds before peak season hits, May is a fantastic choice.

Hiking in Santorini?

I’ve been to Santorini quite a few times over the years, but somehow I’ve never done any real hiking there. On my next trip, I’d love to change that and experience the island from a different perspective.

The obvious choice seems to be the Fira-to-Oia hike, but I’d love to hear from people who have actually done it. How difficult is it, how long did it take you, and what time of day would you recommend starting? Are there particular sections of the trail that are especially scenic?

I’m also curious whether there are other hikes or walking routes on Santorini that don’t get as much attention. I’ve already seen many of the major sights, so I’m especially interested in something that feels a little different from the usual sightseeing.

Any advice about shoes, water, transportation back afterward, or the best season for hiking would be greatly appreciated!

Is Red Beach Worth a Visit?

I'm starting to put together my Santorini itinerary, and Red Beach keeps coming up as one of the island's must-see spots. I've read mixed opinions—some people say it's too crowded, while others say the unique red cliffs and sand make it unlike anywhere else in Greece.

Personally, I think it looks well worth visiting. Even if you don't spend the whole day swimming, it seems like a wonderful place to relax on a beach chair, take in the scenery, or enjoy a leisurely meal at one of the nearby tavernas overlooking the water. Better yet, why not do both? It sounds like the perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon.

For those of you who have been, what did you think? Did you spend time on the beach, have lunch at a taverna, or both? Would you recommend Red Beach to first-time visitors, or are there other Santorini beaches you enjoyed even more?

Best Place to Swim on Santorini?

I'm curious where people think the best place to swim on Santorini is. The island is obviously famous for its views and sunsets, but I don't hear as much discussion about the actual swimming.

I've seen recommendations for Perissa, Kamari, Red Beach, Vlychada, and even swimming from boat excursions around the caldera. They all look beautiful in photos, but I'm wondering which spot people enjoyed the most once they were actually in the water.

Do you prefer the black sand beaches, the more dramatic scenery around Red Beach, or some lesser-known location that visitors often miss? I'm also interested in places with particularly clear water, good snorkeling, or a relaxing atmosphere where you can spend several hours.

If you've been to Santorini, where was your favorite swim? Was it a beach, a hidden cove, or somewhere reached by boat? I'd love to hear your recommendations and why that spot stood out.

Santorini at Christmas - worth the trip?

I’ve visited Santorini before, but always during the warmer months when the island is buzzing with energy. Lately I’ve been thinking about going off-peak, specifically around Christmas, and I’m curious if anyone here has done it.

Is Santorini in winter worth it? I know many hotels, restaurants, and shops close for the season, but I’ve heard mixed things — some say it’s peaceful and magical, others say it’s too quiet and the weather can be unpredictable. I’m not expecting beach days, but I do wonder what it actually feels like to walk around Oia and Fira in December. Are there still good food options? Do any wineries stay open? Is the sea too rough for boat trips?

Is Santorini Walkable?

It has been a while since I’ve been to Santorini, and I’m thinking about going back in the early summer next year. One thing I’m trying to remember is how walkable the island really is.

I know places like Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia are good for walking around once you’re there, but I’m wondering how practical it is to rely on walking for a larger part of the trip. I remember there being some hills, narrow roads, and areas where walking between places might not be as easy as it looks on a map.

For those who have been recently, how much walking did you actually do? Did you find that you still needed buses, taxis, or a rental car most days? I’d especially love to hear from anyone who stayed around Fira or Imerovigli and explored from there.
