I'm planning a trip to Athens and compiling a list of must-see places. I came across the Benaki Museum, and it caught my interest. From what I've gathered, it seems like a place rich in Greek history and culture, housing a diverse collection that spans the ages.

However, I'm trying to manage my time in Athens effectively since there's so much to see and do. For those who have visited the Benaki Museum, would you say it's a worthwhile addition to my itinerary? I'm particularly keen on understanding if its collections are uniquely representative of Greek heritage in ways that other museums in the city might not offer.

I'd love to hear about personal experiences, favorite exhibits, or even tips for visiting (best times to go, any particular tours, etc.). Your feedback will be immensely valuable in helping me decide!

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts and insights.

The Benaki Museum has more recent Greek history, more from the Byzantium and Ottoman periods. For ancient Greek history, the National Archaeological Museum is unbeatable. Followed very closely of course by the Acropolis Museum. So it all depends on what part of Greece's history you prefer. My preference, is the ancient Greek history and the National Archaeological and Acropolis Museums are the best two museums in all of Greece for that part of Greece's history.

The National Archeological and Acropolis Museum are world-class, but the Benaki is a wonderful Museum as described earlier. More of a cultural museum, I especially like their jewelry and clothing exhibits. The Benaki’s Cafe is a popular destination in and of itself. If you’re visiting any of the Cycladic Islands, I’d also recommend the nearby Cycladic Museum.

Visiting the Benaki Museum in Athens is a must for anyone interested in Greek history and culture. Founded in 1930 by Antonis Benakis, the museum showcases an extensive collection of artifacts spanning from antiquity to modern times. Located in a beautiful neoclassical building in central Athens, the museum offers a deep dive into Greece’s rich heritage.

The museum is renowned for its diverse exhibits, which include ancient Greek art, Byzantine icons, Islamic art, and folk costumes. One of the highlights is the collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art, providing insights into the religious and cultural history of Greece.

Is Kolonaki worth visiting?

I'm planning another trip to Athens and keep hearing good things about Kolonaki. I've walked through Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma several times over the years, but I've never really spent much time exploring Kolonaki.

For those who have visited, is it worth adding to my itinerary? I've heard it's a more upscale neighborhood with great cafés, restaurants, shopping, and a different atmosphere than the more tourist-focused areas. I'm wondering if it's the kind of place where you can spend a relaxed afternoon wandering around or if it's mainly for luxury shopping.

If you recommend visiting, what shouldn't I miss? I'd love suggestions for cafés, bakeries, restaurants, viewpoints, or any hidden gems nearby. I'd also be interested in hearing what makes Kolonaki stand out compared to other neighborhoods in Athens.

First-time impressions of Athens

I’m in the early stages of planning an upcoming trip to Athens, and it made me realize something a little funny. It’s been a very long time since it was my first time there.

Every time I go now, I tend to fall into the same rhythm: familiar neighborhoods, favorite walks, the same cafés and viewpoints. I love Athens, but I’d really like to experience it again through fresh eyes instead of repeating my usual routine.

For those of you who remember your first visit, what were your initial impressions of Athens? What surprised you, in a good or bad way? Was it the energy, the mix of ancient and modern, the pace of daily life, or something completely unexpected?

And for anyone who’s helped a first-time visitor plan a trip, what parts of Athens seemed to leave the strongest impression on them?

Favorite day trips from Athens?

I was talking to someone recently about Athens and realized that a lot of people use it mostly as a base before heading to the islands, but there seem to be so many good day trips nearby that don’t get discussed as much.

The obvious ones like Delphi, Hydra, Nafplio, Cape Sounion, and Aegina always come up, but I’m curious which places people actually enjoyed the most once they went. Sometimes the smaller or less hyped trips end up being the most memorable.

I’m especially interested in places that are realistically doable in a single day without feeling rushed. Could be history-focused, food-focused, beach towns, mountain villages, or even somewhere mostly known for the scenery and atmosphere.

Would love to hear everyone’s favorite day trips from Athens, especially places that surprised you once you got there.

Any must-try dessert spots in Athens?

I might be heading to Athens this summer, and I’ve already started making a mental list of all the food I want to try—but I feel like desserts deserve their own plan.

I know about some of the classics like loukoumades and baklava, but I’d love to hear about specific spots that are really worth going out of the way for. Whether it’s a traditional pastry shop, a place known for one standout dessert, or even something more modern, I’m open to all of it.

Also curious if there are any places that are especially good in the summer, something refreshing, lighter, or just perfect after a long day walking around the city.
Would love any recommendations or favorites you’ve found!

Best Athens Restaurants with Acropolis Views?

I’ve been to Athens many times over the years, but one thing I never get tired of is a great meal paired with an Acropolis view. I’ve already been to a few of the classic spots, but for my next trip I’d love to branch out and try something new, maybe somewhere a little unexpected, or a place locals actually enjoy as much as visitors.

I’m open to anything: modern Greek, traditional tavernas, rooftop bars with small plates, or even hotels with great terraces that allow non-guests. What are your favorite restaurants in Athens with Acropolis views?
