I know many of us love renting cars during our summer vacations, because it's just so comfortable and convenient. But Athens is not the place to drive! There is so much traffic, and the parking situation is just horrific. Skip the car rental while visiting Athens and just stick to walking, subways, and taxis!

This is so true, driving will waste a bunch of your time and money! I really suggest that you walk around the city anyways so you can explore

I think it depends on why type of trip/vacation you are having in Greece.

Going to an island or two for a few weeks and staying in a hotel that is near the busy areas, beach, etc then you will be fine without a car. If you are staying in or around the Athens or Thessaloniki areas and want to explore it is much more cost effective to rent a car and drive.

And if you have lots of family in Greece (if you are Greek) just ask family to take you around LOL. Remember all the times when relatives from Greece visit you and you drive them around everywhere, hahaha...

We have a car on the outskirts of Athens and we don't drive in Athens. Drive to the nearest Metro and use it to downtown. Very convenient as long as they're not on strike. Watch out for pickpockets though.

That sounds like a much more feasible option. I tend to get lost on metros so I usually take taxis when I'm in the city

It definitely depends on what you want to do. If you are staying within the city limits, you can get by with taxis, walking, and public transportation. If you want to take extended road trips it's best to rent a car, otherwise you can book a tour that can take you on the excursions.

Ancient Eleusis Archaeological Site

I have been to Athens several times, and I didn't know this place existed. Ithas caught my interest due to its rich mythology and pivotal role in ancient Greek religious life.

I understand that Eleusis was a significant center for religious practices, most notably the Eleusinian Mysteries—secret ceremonies held in honor of Demeter and Persephone. However, my knowledge barely scratches the surface, and I’m eager to learn more before my visit.

Has anyone visited it? I don't know much about it and I am trying to figure out if it is worth it. I love Ancient Greek history and mythology and this has the potential to be interesting to me on a lot of different levels.

Unique Photo Spots in Athens?

I will be traveling to Athens this year in the spring. What are some great photo spots throughout the city? Aside from what inspires me?

I have a bad habit of forgetting to take pics while away and I come back from the vacation with a random collection. This time, I want to do some advanced planning. Some of my ideas:

- Parthenon/ Acropolis - A shot with people and the Parthenon in the background
- Food photos - plenty of shots with people - and table shots - and of myself - eating the delicious food
- Monastiraki - This place is full of life - there could be some great candid shots

Do you guys have any ideas?

Agios Nikolaos Rangavas Church – This church is located in the heart of Athens and is considered one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the city.

The Church of the Holy Apostles – This Byzantine church dates back to the 10th century and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of Byzantine architecture in Greece.

St. Irene’s Church – St. Irene’s Church is located in the heart of Athens and is considered one of the oldest Byzantine churches in the city.

Best shopping in Athens?

I'm planning a trip to Athens and I'm a bit of a shopaholic. I want to make the most of my time there and experience the best shopping the city has to offer.

From what I've heard, Athens is a treasure trove of markets, boutiques, and shops - but I'd really appreciate some local or experienced insights.

Could anyone recommend:
  • The best areas for unique, local finds?
  • Any specific stores known for quality Greek goods?
  • Tips for navigating the markets?
I've only done historical things in Athens and visited friends. I have never taken the time to shop, but I will have plenty of time in Athens over the summer.

Tips for saving money in Athens?

I'm planning a trip to Athens and though I'm excited, I'm also trying to be mindful of my budget. The charm of historical sites like the Acropolis, the Plaka district, and experiencing the vibrant Greek culture is something I cannot put a price tag on. However, I am looking for ways to stretch my euros further while enjoying what Athens has to offer.

Does anyone have tips or personal experiences to share on saving money while traveling in Athens?
