Off the beaten track suggestions for Santorini?

I've been completely mesmerized by the postcard photos of Santorini, but beyond the blue domes and the sunsets of Oia, I'm looking to uncover some of the island's best-kept secrets. What do you suggest?

Have you stumbled upon any villages, beaches, or local haunts here that you loved? Or maybe historical sites too? I am just looking to do something different that what is typical.

Views like this wouldn't hurt!

When I just went to Santorini, I craved something different, as well. So, we found a local tour company where we booked a private tour. Together, we customized an itinerary. We were there on a cruise stop - but it was a smaller ship so we were able to stay on Santorini the entire day - we were there from the morning until well after sunset.

I recommend doing something like this. We found the company while we were shopping/ walking through the streets of Fira after we got off the tender.

We went to Red Beach, Akrotiri, to a Taverna they recommended, saw some great photo spots off the beaten track, and we found a great sunset spot afterwards.
 
Not much has been “undiscovered” in Santorini, but some suggestions (other than the must-see archeological digs) would be the hilltop village of Pyrgos, lunch and a swim off the rocks in Ammoudi, a walk along the upper village of Therasia on the other side of the Caldera, and a very early morning cliffside walk from Fira to Imerovigli.

Dealing with Santorini crowds during peak season?

I’m considering a trip to Santorini this summer for about 3–4 days, but I know how intense the crowds can get during peak season. I haven’t fully decided yet, but I’d love to hear from anyone who’s been recently.

I’m curious about how to make the most of the experience even with the busy atmosphere. I’d especially appreciate tips on seeing the caldera views and exploring Oia without feeling completely overwhelmed. If there are any quieter beaches, villages, or scenic spots that still offer that iconic Santorini charm, I’d love to hear about them.

Dining and sunset-watching are high on my list, so I’m also interested in recommendations for places that aren’t overly packed with tourists. And I’m wondering what the easiest way to get around is, whether it’s doable without a car or if something like an ATV is worth it.

Santorini at Christmas - worth the trip?

I’ve visited Santorini before, but always during the warmer months when the island is buzzing with energy. Lately I’ve been thinking about going off-peak, specifically around Christmas, and I’m curious if anyone here has done it.

Is Santorini in winter worth it? I know many hotels, restaurants, and shops close for the season, but I’ve heard mixed things — some say it’s peaceful and magical, others say it’s too quiet and the weather can be unpredictable. I’m not expecting beach days, but I do wonder what it actually feels like to walk around Oia and Fira in December. Are there still good food options? Do any wineries stay open? Is the sea too rough for boat trips?

Which Santorini villages still feel quiet and traditional now?

I’m thinking of visiting Santorini next year, but I keep hearing that the island has changed a lot — especially with how crowded Oia and Fira have become. I love the idea of seeing the caldera views, but I’m also hoping to experience the quieter, more traditional side of the island.

Are there still villages that feel peaceful and authentic, where you can wander through narrow streets, talk to locals, and maybe enjoy a meal at a family-run taverna without the crowds?

I’ve heard names like Megalochori, Pyrgos, and Emporio mentioned, but it’s hard to tell from online photos which places still hold onto that “old Santorini” charm. What do you think?

Wine Tasing Tips in Santorini

I’m Greek, but I’ve never actually done a proper wine-tasting tour in Santorini. I might finally go next year, and I want to make the most of it. I’ve always heard that the volcanic soil gives Santorini wines a special character, especially the Assyrtiko—and I’m very curious to try the famous Vinsanto in the place where it’s made.

For those of you who have been, do you have any tips? Are there wineries that really stand out for their atmosphere, history, or even just amazing caldera views? Do most tastings require reservations, or can you drop in?

I’d also love to know if there are lesser-known varietals besides Assyrtiko that I should look out for. And when it comes to exploring, do you recommend booking a guided wine tour with transport included, or is it simple enough to visit wineries on your own?

Is Akrotiri worth visiting?

I’m heading to Santorini soon, and I keep seeing mixed opinions about Akrotiri. Some travelers say it’s one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Greece, a “Minoan Pompeii” with incredibly well-preserved houses, fresco fragments, and that haunting feeling of a city frozen in time. Others say it’s too restored, too curated, or too quick of a visit to justify the entrance fee.

For those of you who’ve been: is Akrotiri actually worth visiting, or is it more for serious history lovers? Did the site feel immersive, or does the roofed structure make it harder to picture the ancient city? How much time did you spend there, and is it better with a guide?

I’m trying to decide whether to fit Akrotiri into a tight itinerary. I’d love to hear your impressions, was it memorable, educational, emotional, or just “fine”? Any tips for making the visit more meaningful?
