I'm planning a trip to Crete and am very interested in experiencing the local olive oil culture firsthand. I've heard that Crete has some of the best olive oils in the world, and I'd love to do a tasting tour while I'm there.

Can anyone recommend any good olive oil tasting tours or specific olive farms to visit? I'm particularly interested in places that offer detailed insights into the production process and maybe even some historical background on olive oil in Crete.

Thank you for your help!

If you’re in the Chania area, Wanderlust Tours - Chania does great van tours! Here is a description of their olive tour:

“Our Olive Tour is a tour of culture and history. A 360 experience of what Crete is, and what it was through the ages. Guests who join will see, taste and feel the heart and core of Greek and Cretan living, the olive, in all its forms. They will also learn about the events that led us here, and that shaped the history of the land.” Contact: [email protected]

Nicole Lelekis runs incredibly fun, off-the-beaten path, informative small group tours. Even though I’ve been traveling to Chania for over 25 years, I’ve taken her Therisso Gorge Tour so I’m confident that you won’t be disappointed.

This is wonderful information! I am going to keep it safe for the next time I am on Crete. I recall the last time I was in Crete, I was able to visit the a very old olive tree. Amazing that it still produced olives, too! What a memorable experience that was. The tradition of olives on Crete is fantastic and it will be nice to go on a tour to see it all tied together.

Fantastic thread on olive oil tours—so helpful! We’re also planning lodging and found Cretarent listings for countryside homes near olive groves. A stay like that plus a tasting tour would be a great combo. Any fave olive farms you’ve visited?

Favorite Sunset Spot on Crete

I’m starting to seriously consider a trip to Crete this July, mostly because I’ve become really intrigued by the food culture there. If I go, I’ll probably spend a few weeks exploring different parts of the island rather than rushing around.

One thing I’d really love to experience while I’m there is a truly memorable sunset. I know Crete is large and has so many landscapes, so I’m curious where people have seen the most beautiful evening views. I’m open to anything, whether it’s a famous viewpoint, a quiet beach, a hilltop village, or even a restaurant terrace with an amazing atmosphere.

Do you have a favorite sunset spot on Crete that really stood out to you?

Is Crete a good destination for a winter getaway?

I’m starting to plan a winter getaway and keep coming back to the idea of Crete. I’ve visited Greece in summer, but I’ve never experienced it in winter — and I’m wondering if Crete is actually a good choice for that time of year, maybe even for Christmas.

I know it’s the southernmost island, so the weather should be milder, but I’m curious what it feels like day to day. Are cafés and tavernas still open? Do locals gather in the squares, or does everything quiet down? I’ve heard Chania and Heraklion stay lively year-round, but I’m not sure about the smaller towns, possibly to even stay through Christmas. What do you think?

Best "Home Base" on Crete?

I’m in the early planning stages for a trip to Crete and could really use some perspective from people who know the island well. I’m thinking of spending about two weeks there and trying to decide whether it makes sense to choose one central “home base” or to divide my time between a few different locations.

Crete seems so large and varied that part of me wonders if staying in one place would mean a lot of long drives, while another part likes the idea of settling in, getting to know one area well, and not constantly packing up. I’m especially curious about places that work well as a base for day trips—somewhere with good food, easy access to beaches or hikes, and a town atmosphere rather than just resorts.

If you’ve done a longer stay on Crete, how did you structure it? Did you stay put or move around, and would you do the same again?

Which Crete Beach Do You Like Best? Elafonissi vs. Balos?

I’m still in the research phase for a future trip to Crete, and I keep going back and forth between Elafonissi and Balos, both look absolutely unreal. Elafonissi has that pink-tinted sand and turquoise shallows that seem straight out of a dream, but Balos looks wild and untouched, with those sweeping lagoon views and that little islet in the background.

For anyone who’s actually been, which one left a bigger impression on you in person? Is one easier to reach or less crowded during peak season? I’ve read the road to Balos can be rough, is it worth the drive? Would you base yourself in Chania for both, or stay closer to one? Curious what locals or repeat visitors think!

Information Balos Lagoon?

I’m thinking about visiting Crete this year, and Balos Lagoon keeps coming up as one of the top spots to see. The photos look incredible, but I’m trying to get a more realistic sense of what the experience is actually like.

For those of you who’ve been, is it as stunning in person as it looks online? I’ve also heard getting there can be a bit of a trek—either by boat or a rough drive plus a hike. How difficult is it really? Of all the times I have visited Crete, I've never been. It's truly amazing how much there is to see there.
