Is it possible to see the Samaria Gorge without doing the long hike?

I will be in Crete over the summer. I heard the hike is long. 11 miles, most of it downhill or flat. I just don't think I am up for it. Downhill climbing hurts my knee too much.

I have a friend who goes to Crete a lot and made an off-hand comment that you don't need to hike, but she didn't know all the details.

Does anyone hear? She mentioned taking a ferry. I am having a hard time picturing it. I looked into tours and they all involve hiking.

It is!

Take the ferry to Agia Roummeli.

Typically, people who hike start in Omalos, which is the official start of the hike at the top. Then, it's 11 miles of hiking downhill until you reach the gorge, then a straight shot through the gorge.

The hike basically empties in Agia Roummeli and people take the ferry back.

If you start the village, you can simply hike through some of the gorge - it will be flat and you can view the scenery without going through the work of the 11 miles. Plus, the village is delightful. Sit at the black sand beach, buy some honey, get a bite to heat, take some photos at the gorge. It's actually a really nice day!

Scenic Road Trips to Do in Crete? Advice?

I am curious about doing a road trip in Crete and would love some advice on the most scenic routes and must-see spots! I’ve heard the island is perfect for driving, with stunning coastal views, charming villages, and historical sites at every turn.

Some routes I’m considering:
  • Chania to Elafonissi Beach: Is the drive as breathtaking as they say?
  • Rethymno to Preveli Beach: Worth the detour for the palm forest?
  • Heraklion to Lassithi Plateau: I’m intrigued by the windmills and traditional vibe.
I’m also curious about lesser-known gems, like picturesque mountain villages or unique accommodations to stay overnight. Any tips on navigating Crete’s winding roads or favorite roadside tavernas?

Would love to hear your experiences and recommendations! What’s the one drive you’d say I cannot miss?

Ferry from Athens to Crete Question

I might be going to Crete this summer and I am thinking about taking the overnight ferry from Piraeus instead of flying. I’ve never taken a long ferry ride in Greece before, so I’d love some advice from people who’ve done it.

Is it worth booking a cabin, or are the airplane-style seats comfortable enough for a night crossing? I’ve heard mixed things. Also, how early should I arrive at the port—especially if I’m traveling as a foot passenger?

I’m also curious about which ferry company people prefer—Anek, Blue Star, Minoan? Are there big differences in comfort, cleanliness, or punctuality?

I’ll be heading to either Heraklion or Chania, still deciding. If you’ve done both routes, is one better than the other in terms of views, schedule, or overall experience?

Advice for Road Trip Across Crete?

I’ll be spending 10 days on Crete this summer, and I’d love some advice on planning a road trip across the island! My goal is to stay in a few different, notable places for a couple of days each, to experience as much of Crete’s unique charm as possible.

I’m thinking of starting in Heraklion to explore Knossos Palace and the Archaeological Museum, but where should I go from there? Should I include Chania, Rethymno, or the south coast? Any must-visit villages, beaches, or historical sites along the way?

I’d also appreciate tips for scenic driving routes and local restaurants to try in smaller towns. Is it easy to find accommodations on the go, or should I book ahead? I'll be going in early June.

Touring Crete for History Lovers

I’ve been to Crete several times and absolutely love the island, but I’ve always approached it through the lens of beaches, villages, and food. This summer, someone in our group is a huge history buff, so I’d love to shape part of our itinerary around Crete’s historical sites and experiences.

Of course, we’ll visit Knossos, but beyond that, I’m looking for less obvious ruins, museums, and historical spots that are truly worth seeing. Any recommendations for Minoan, Venetian, or WWII-era sites? Are there any local guides or tours that go deep into Cretan history and mythology?

We’ll have a car, so happy to explore anywhere on the island — especially spots that aren’t overrun with tourists but still offer a strong sense of Crete’s past.

Would love to hear your favorite history-focused places or experiences on the island. What’s not to miss for someone who wants to really understand Crete’s layers of history?
