Why does Rhodes have castles?

Does anyone know a bit about the history of Rhodes? I'm planning my trip and I didn't realize that there are so many castles on the island. Does anyone know why?

It's a medieval city! I believe that knights occupied the island from 1309 until 1522
 
During the time of the Crusades in the Middle Ages, the Knights of Saint John had their headquarters on the island of Rhodes and there are many structures associated with those headquarters. There's a hospital, the Palace of the Grandmaster, etc. Besides that, the island has ancient history, as well. The Acropolis on Lindos is one of the ancient places that are cool to visit.

I am working on planning a trip to Rhodes and am trying to prioritize which ones I should see. I've come up with a list. Did I miss anything? Realistically, I might only have time to see about 5 places, but I want more on the list than I can see so I can decide what seems the most interesting to me.
