During the 90's my late husband and myself travelled from Kavala to Thassos by ferry, sadly I cannot remember where we flew into. I know we hired a car from the airport. Every year we would visit different parts of Greece such as Samothraki, Evia, Karpathos, Loutra, Stoupa, Kalymnos and many other islands and parts of the mainland which again I cannot remember.
I have a yearning to revisit Kavala/Thassos again with my partner and I am very cross/upset with myself as I cannot remember how we got to some of these places.
I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to advise me.
We loved Greece and during his funeral we played Greek music and it went down well, the congregation were tapping their feet to the music. Next week we have managed to get a holiday on Kos so at last we can get to see Greece again, also, my partner hasn't been to Kos, I have since losing my husband and other islands.
Thank you in advance.

Its likely that you flew into Thessaloniki or Kavala airport and then took a ferry from Kavala port to Thassos

Either Thessaloniki or Kavala then took a ferry from Karamoti to Thassos . About 2 hours drive from Thessaloniki to Karamoti . Short drive (10 minutes) from Kavala airport to Karamoti. It is a long time since I went but I think about 1.5 hours on the ferry.

Thank you your information is very helpful. I think we flew into Thessaloniki as we stopped a couple of nights on the way to Kavala in an area which I can't recall, but popular with Eastern Europeans. All the best and tha nk you once again.

If you flew from abroad it has to be Thessaloniki. Kavala airport is a small regional airport and to my knowledge you can't fly direct to any European cities . If you flew from Athens it could be either.
It is an easy drive from Thessaloniki, motorway all the way.

Drove from Athens to Volos took ferry to Skopelos, stayed there 4 days, did some spearfishing then back to Volos . Drove from there to Thessaloniki spent 3 days there, then drove to Karamoti then ferry to Thasos for 3 days.
That was about 20 years ago just before Greece changed currency to Euro.
We usually rent a car at Elefterios Venizelos airport, I think it was the first year it opened. We always use the same rental company and the allow the car to be taken on ferries, most will not allow.

That was my only time, went there specifically to do spearfishing in the pristine waters there. Not very touristy back then, Skiathos is better known, all the islands in the Sporades group are nice I believe. We go to Greece very often though.

Did you do spearfishing with an organized group or with friends/family?? Because that sounds like something my sons would love to do

It is not a good idea to spearfish or dive on your own. In that case we were 2 couples but only us guys spearfished. The girls just sunbaked on the beach/rocks and had a swim.
I was a lot younger then, I gave up spearfishing even in Australia years ago. I started spearfishing when I was 10 years old. Now I fish with a rod and line, mostly game fishing.

Cycladic Islands in Greece 'Threatened by Surge in Tourism!

Sustainable Travel to Greece?

I'm currently planning a trip to Greece and am passionate about making my travel as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible. Given the beauty and historical significance of Greece, I want to ensure that my visit contributes positively to the environment and local communities there.

Does anyone have any tips or experiences they could share on sustainable travel practices in Greece? I'm looking for advice on everything from eco-friendly accommodations, sustainable dining options, to ways of exploring the country that minimize my carbon footprint. Also, if there are specific activities or tours that support local conservation efforts or communities, I'd love to hear about those too!

Question about scuba diving in Greece

I'm currently planning a trip to Greece, a destination that has long been on my bucket list, not just for its history and cuisine, but especially for the scuba diving experiences it offers. I've heard that Greece boasts some incredible underwater landscapes, from vibrant marine life to fascinating wrecks.

Given the vastness of Greece's coastline, I thought I would try to see the country in a different way.

Let's say I want to go scuba diving in a particular island. How do I go about doing it?

Visiting Delphi worth it?

I am trying to figure out if visiting Delphi is worth it. I want to fit seeing as many historical sites as I can into my itinerary. I've always been fascinated by ancient cultures and their histories, which naturally puts places like Athens and Santorini on my list. Recently, I've been reading up on Delphi and am intrigued by its significant historical and cultural value, not to mention its picturesque landscapes.

Given its status as the center of the world in ancient Greek civilization and the home of the famous oracle, it sounds like a place full of fascinating stories and ruins. However, I'm also aware that Greece is full of remarkable places to visit, each with its unique allure.

Greek Islands Food Tour?

I am a foodie and I love to cook. Does anyone know of any food tour situations that I can do in the islands, or maybe island hopping?

I am in the midst of planning an exciting adventure to Greece and am particularly interested in experiencing the country through its cuisine. I've heard that island hopping offers not just stunning views but also a taste of local flavors that differ from island to island.

With so many beautiful islands, from the renowned Santorini to the charming Skopelos, I'm looking for recommendations on food tours or culinary experiences that are part of island hopping packages. Any recommendations you may have would be great!
