Exploring Little Venice in Mykonos?

I'm planning a trip to the enchanting area of Little Venice in Mykonos and I've heard so much about its stunning views and quirky charm. I'm reaching out to this community because I know there are a lot of well-traveled folks around here who could share their insights.

Can anyone suggest the absolute must-see attractions and activities in Little Venice? I'm interested in anything from historical sites, picturesque spots for photography, to the best places to relax and watch the sunset.

Also, any tips on hidden gems or less-known spots you can recommend would be great too!

Little Venice, the windmills, and the Church of Panagia Paraportiani are perhaps the most photographed areas of Mykonos. If you can find a fishing boat early morning in the picturesque harbor, you’ll get extra points! Little Venice is quite easily explored; walk down the narrow alleyways, try to find Petros the Pelican, and be sure to have a sunset cocktail at a cafe where the water is almost lapping at your chair! Skarpa Bar comes to mind.

For history & culture, Mykonos has a maritime museum, archeological museum and folklore museums, as well as a half-day boat trip to the sacred island of Delos. If you have time in Athens before you visit Mykonos, I highly recommend the Cycladic Museum; a great museum.

Mykonos is small and very popular, so I’m not sure that anything is lesser-known, but if you rent a car or scooter to explore the island on your own, you might find some areas that are still more or less rural.

I would suggest that if you are staying in Mykonos for an extended period of time that you rent a car. It will make getting around so much easier. I find it so much easier to get around myself. Finding transportation was stressful to me - the tax stands and bus situation wasn't obvious to me - and I had been to Mykonos before and I speak Greek!

Ended up hiring a private driver at the last minute but seriously, I wished that I had a car. I was only there for a short time.

That being said, I second the suggestion about Little Venice. Absolutely stunning!

Best Sunsets in Mykonos?

Much has been said about the sunsets in Santorini, and for the longest time I just assumed that was the place in Greece for sunset views. But recently, a friend came back from Mykonos and shared some absolutely gorgeous sunset photos, golden light over the water, soft colors, even the windmills in the background. I honestly had no idea Mykonos could look like that at sunset.

Now I’m curious if this is something people seek out there, or if it’s more of a hidden bonus compared to Santorini.

Do you have any favorite sunset spots on Mykonos? Are there specific beaches, viewpoints, or areas in town that really stand out? I’d love to hear recommendations before I start planning a trip.

Is Mykonos Worth Visiting Outside of Peak Summer?

I’m curious to hear people’s experiences with Mykonos outside of peak summer. Most of what you see online focuses on July and August, crowded beaches, packed beach clubs, and very high prices, but I know some islands change completely once the main season ends.

For those who’ve visited Mykonos in the shoulder months or off-season, what was it actually like? Did the island feel calmer and more enjoyable, or too quiet and limited? I’m especially interested in how much is still open: restaurants, beaches, transportation, and boat trips.

How different does Mykonos Town feel when it’s not overflowing with visitors? And does the island’s character come through more once the party scene tones down? I heard it could be boring, but I guess it would depend on what we want.

Staying in a villa rental on Mykonos?

We’re considering staying in a villa on Mykonos because our group is fairly large, and it seems like it might be more practical (and fun) than booking multiple hotel rooms. I’ve started looking online, but honestly the number of options is overwhelming, and I’m not sure what the best approach is.

For those who have done this before, how did you find your rental? Did you go through a villa agency, booking platforms, or local contacts? I’ve read that location makes a big difference depending on whether you want nightlife, beaches, or something quieter, so I’m also trying to figure out what areas make the most sense. If you’ve stayed in a Mykonos villa with a group, I’d love to hear what worked or what didn't work, as well.

Advice for Snorkeling in Mykonos?

I'm considering a trip to Mykonos this summer and was thinking about doing some snorkeling while I'm there. I've spent time swimming in Greece before, but I've never really explored what Mykonos offers specifically for snorkeling.

For those who have snorkeled around the island, are there particular beaches or areas that you would recommend? I'm less interested in organized excursions and more interested in places where I can simply bring my own gear and explore from shore.

How is the visibility in the water during the summer months? Are there any spots known for interesting marine life, underwater rock formations, or especially clear water?

I'd also appreciate any practical advice regarding currents, crowds, or the best times of day to go. If you've had a great snorkeling experience in Mykonos, I'd love to hear where you went and what made it memorable.

Renting a Car on Mykonos?

I’m heading to Mykonos for a week and trying to decide if renting a car is worth it for at least a few days. Normally when I travel to Greek islands, I like walking and using buses when possible, but this trip might be a little different.

The apartment we rented looks beautiful, but it’s a bit tucked away from Mykonos Town and not really within walking distance of much. I’m starting to wonder if relying on taxis all week will become expensive or inconvenient, especially at night.

For people who have been recently, would you recommend renting a car? Was parking difficult around the island or beaches? Also, how are the roads for someone who hasn’t driven there before?

I’m mainly hoping to explore beaches, tavernas, and spend some evenings in town without constantly stressing about transportation. Trip is during the summer.
