I know that Athens is a big city, and I tend to do the same things all the time. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love what I end up doing in the city. Here is where I visit:

  • Plaka - it's touristy, but I love it
  • Monastiraki - I really love the flea market!
  • Syntagma - I like to hang around at the square and poke around
  • Kifisia - I love shopping!
I know there is a ton to do. I want to branch out!

Have you been to Mount Lycabettus?
To the Exarchia district?
To the Koukaki district (just south of the Acropolis Museum)
To the Pangrati district?
To the Keramikos district ?

At the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center?
At Kaisariani Monastery?
At the marina in the port of Piraeus?
In Glyfada?

For a more off-the-beaten track experience I would suggest Nea Ionia

I really love Glyfada, I agree with Hash. Also Mt. Lycabettus is a really cool spot, especially around sunset. You're off to a great start!

Just imagine Glyfada for minute 52 years ago!?......I flew in for a fast few days to deliver some Vinyl LPs to our subsidiary companies Club 18-30 in Voula..... Glyfada had 1 hotel 2 peripteros ....3 Tavernas and the old Airport just behind.....I could see my aeroplane ✈️ landing before I took off back to good ol'London town and onwards to Mallorca.... Greece blew my mind and what a different culture it was from Spain!!...got caught up with the Junta and the tanks and spent 2 days on the floor at the Airport!!.... what a blast that was!?😂😂... Kalley Mera from Thailand!!❤️

@Jolui Great suggestions! The only thing I could add is Microlimano where one can eat fresh fish right on the water. It's close to the Piraeus port.

@paharo45 If you want to know where to go in Exarcheia, check out my post here: A Guide to Exarcheia

How long to spend in Athens?

I am trying to decide how long to be in Athens. I have some people to visit, I want to do some of the city walks (Lycabettus, Philopappou), and I also want to visit some of the sites. I have visited most of the sites in the past, so I am not going to go too crazy here. My goal for Greece is to relax, visit people, making go to a beach of two. I am thinking of picking a good island with beaches and spending maybe 5 nights at this island, and then possibly spending the rest of the time in Athens. I am trying to decide if I will spend 3 weeks or more in Greece this summer. I think two weeks in Athens sounds like a lot, but on the other hand, I love to just pick one or two spots and really enjoy them during my time in Greece, rather than travel all around and get exhausted. What do you think?

27.8 million tourists visited Greece in 2022 and spent 618 euros per trip on average !

Having worked in Tourism Industry for many years I am sceptical about the type of data....the most interesting take for me is the average spending per trip which is so low!....by this I mean should all the high end Greek destinations are excluded Greece is an extremely affordable and excellent place to visit and more importantly should any one have additional time and can afford to spend their spare cash..... Greece is the word!❤️❤️..
Not surprised US inbound figures are so positive!.....and will be even better this coming season!!

Visiting Church of Saint Demetrios in Santorini

One of my favorite places to visit in Thessaloniki is the Church of Saint Demetrios. I heard he is the patron saint of the city?

When I went, I only just walked through and enjoyed the look and feel. I don't know much about it.

Would love to hear your opinions of this place, I will be passing through Thessaloniki in a few months and am hoping to catch a church Service. Last time I went, I just visited, there was no service going on.

Athens, Rhodes and Milos among the 20 best holiday destinations in Europe in 2023!

Always inspiring and informative editorials from the Tornos team!.... Athens in my opinion has just only just become popular in the past 20 years or so! ...... Now I remember Rhodes being a preferred destination 50 years ago when I began working in Tourism from good ol'London town!..... Milos is a new kid on the block!..... Fabulous breathtakingly beautiful beaches!
