Hi guys, is the Benaki museum worth the trip? I’m backpacking through Europe on a budget, and I’m trying to see what the most “bang for your buck” places are.

If you like Byzantine and more modern Greek history, then yes otherwise the National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum are far better for ancient artefacts.

It depends what you like seeing in museums. It’s a very well respected, reputable museum with very well researched exhibitions. One of the best in Greece in modern art and other contemporary themes. There are two Benaki museums, check them out and visit the cafe on the very central one! The one in Pireos str is not open every day due to financial problems. Check opening days before you go!

List of Things to Do in Piraeus

I am staying in Piraeus for a few nights while waiting to board a ship. Thought I'd brainstorm some things to do:

- Take a day cruise to one of the local islands - like Aegina
- Take public transport to the Plaka area and maybe even see the Parthenon again - I have done this so many times but I love it
- Maybe rent a car to explore around on my own? Do something like head to Sounion for the Temple of Poseidon and visit the beach that's there?

What would you guys do if you were me?

Taking the Ferry to Mykonos?

I am planning a trip for Greece next year to Greece. I usually fly into Athens and then fly into a place like Santorini or Mykonos from there.

I plan to go to Mykonos next summer and I am kind of sick of flying.

Is the ferry situation easy from Piraeus? Is this a better option than airplanes?

Someone told me I could wait until the last minute and buy the tickets that day, but I am not sure I feel comfortable with that...

Visiting the Sounio Area

I am flying into Athens soon. I know I want to visit the Temple of Poseidon. In looking into the area, though, it seems like there's a lot more to do than I thought. For example, I saw pics and there's a nice resort in the area...

Should I maybe consider staying in this area? Is there enough to do?

Visiting the Cycladic Museum

Though I will be in Mykonos for a while when I come to Greece (soon!) I will have some time in Athens.

I will be tied up with wedding festivities on Mykonos, but I will have some time. So, I want to learn about the history and culture of the island. I know there has to be more to it there than all the parties and the beach scene.

I plan to visit the Cycladic Museum in Athens to get ready. Is there anything I should keep in mind while I explore the museum?

Fun Side Trips While Staying in Athens

I've been to Athens. I have done side trips from Athens. Still, I love Rick Steve's work and I found this interesting! He visited some of the places I've seen, but frankly, he made me want to see them again. This was a fun watch!

One of the places I haven't been that he mentioned is Hydra. Such a cool-looking place.
