I am leaving for Greece soon and I have some packing questions:

- Is it easy enough to by things like hair straightener/ hair dryer. Mine aren't dual voltage (I don't think) and I am not sure I will have time to buy new ones before I go.
- I am trying to figure out what to do about using my cell to call the US. Should I just go and get a burner phone while there and do a pay as you go situation?
- Is it easy enough to find a laundromat? I will be in Greece a while and will need to do laundry. It's been a while since I would be in Greece for this long.

If you have a favorite hair straightener, then I would bring it….same with suntan lotion. Otherwise, there are Sephora stores in the cities and grocery stores everywhere that carry a variety of brand name hair products. Years ago I purchased a hair dryer while in Greece, but now most accommodations offer hair dryers; I would check before you purchase one. I can’t answer your question on the phone; I usually add a temporary global plan to my iPhone with my carrier. There are laundromats, but they might not necessarily be convenient to where you’re staying. If you’ve already booked accommodation, then they could answer the hair dryer/laundry questions. Otherwise my best advice would be to pack light and to consider hand wash as an option for casual clothes; clothes dry quickly there.

If your hair appliance aren't dual voltage, don't bring them. But double check - most are! You can easily buy dual voltage ones before you go. Bring a straightener for sure - most places I have seen have hair dryers.

In terms of laundry, I would personally just hadn't wash - I use the soap they give at hotels!

I see it's been a while since this was posted, but I wanted to chime in—has anyone ever needed a light rain jacket later in the season? I'm packing for late September and trying to decide if I should bother. Also wondering if anyone has tips for keeping shoes from taking up too much space in the suitcase; I always overpack those.

I always forget how windy Greece can get, especially on the islands — a light jacket or hoodie saved me more than once at night. For kid-friendly places, anything like family resort Khao Yai in Thailand is perfect because it has activities and space for everyone; so if you’re staying anywhere like that in Greece, pack some casual clothes for lounging or joining in.

Good Greek Mainland Destinations to Stay At?

Hey all, I am wondering if there are any good places to stay in Mainland Greece that are beyond Athens. I’ve done the typical island-hopping thing before, but I feel like the mainland is full of gems that often get overlooked. I’d love recommendations for towns or regions that are beautiful, culturally rich, and good for staying a few days.

I’m into history, local food, and scenic views, and I would also love a nice area nearby with restaurants and cafes. I’ve heard good things about Nafplio and Metsovo, but I’m open to all suggestions—whether it’s coastal, mountain, or something totally off the radar.

Tips for Visiting the Dodecanese Islands

Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to the Dodecanese Islands and could use some advice on which islands to prioritize. There are so many to choose from—Rhodes, Kos, Symi, Patmos, Karpathos, Astypalaia, and more—but I won’t have time to see them all.

I love a mix of history, beautiful beaches, authentic Greek food, and charming villages. I’d love to visit at least one island with a lively atmosphere and another that’s more off-the-beaten-path. If you’ve been, which ones stood out to you the most?

Also, any general tips for visiting the Dodecanese? Is island-hopping easy between them? Are there ferry routes that work well for multiple stops, or would it be better to focus on just 1–2 islands?

Seeing an Ancient Greek Play while in Greece?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to Greece and would love to see an ancient Greek play while I’m there—something staged in an open-air ancient theater, like Epidaurus or even Herodes Atticus in Athens. It’s been a dream of mine to experience a classic tragedy or comedy under the stars in the kind of venue it was originally performed in.

I was wondering if anyone has tips for how to plan for this. Do these performances only happen during certain months or festivals? Do I need to buy tickets far in advance? Also, are the plays typically performed in modern or ancient Greek—and is it still enjoyable if you don’t speak fluent Greek?

Any advice on what to bring, where to sit, or how to make the most of the experience would be amazing. I’d really appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences. Thanks!

How much money to take to Greece?

I’m starting to plan the money side of my trip to Greece and was wondering—how much should I realistically bring with me? I know it depends on travel style, but I’d love to hear what others spent daily on average for things like meals, local transport, entrance fees, and small extras like coffee or souvenirs.

I’m staying in mid-range accommodations that are already paid for, and I’ll be visiting both Athens and a couple of islands. I’d like to enjoy the trip without worrying too much, but I also don’t want to bring way more than I need or rely too heavily on cards.

Do most places take credit cards now, or is cash still king? And how much should I carry on me at any given time? Any tips for ATMs, budgeting, or knowing what’s “enough” per day?

Appreciate any insight from recent travelers. Thanks in advance!
