Need Packing Advice for Greece for December

I am going on a short trip to Athens, Greece in a few weeks ... I have no idea what I am doing. I truthfully have only ever gone to Greece in the summer!

I looked up the weather, it says low 60's Fahrenheit. I am trying to picture it. I am usually so warm in Greece!

I am thinking to pack a bunch of clothes I can layer, and then maybe a light jacket? Does that sound right?
 
You might want to add a thin warm layer like a cashmere top, a scarf (just in case), and a raincoat with a warm zip-out lining. While it’s unusual to have snow in Athens, you’ll most likely be dealing with some rain and lower nighttime temperatures. Even though the weather says 60’s, there will be fluctuation in temperature and more importantly being December, you’ll want to have season-appropriate clothing. With cool breezes, it definitely won’t feel like summer, but it’ll be a comfortable and enjoyable time to visit a great city!

Be prepared for cold weather. The temperature in Athens is somewhere between what you'd expect in Memphis, TN and ATL, GA... If you're familiar with that area of the USA then you know it could certainly be in the 60s in December, but it could also get into the 30s or 40s as well.

I truly had no idea that Athens got that cold! Fascinating. I have only ever been in summer or fall. Thank you!
 
This time of year I would plan on the 30s! I see people in Athens wearing wool coats, etc on the streets. So they're in their cold season now...
 
Layers are key for December in Greece—mild days but chilly nights. If you're heading to Crete, consider renting a car from Cretarent so you can comfortably explore without worrying about transportation during the off-season.

I’m thinking about planning a Greece trip next year that is focused almost entirely on history, and I’d love some ideas for the best places to include.

Athens would obviously be part of the itinerary for the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, museums, and other archaeological sites. I’m trying to figure out whether it’s realistic to travel around Greece without renting a car. I’d prefer not to drive if I can avoid it, especially since I’m not familiar with the roads, parking, or driving customs there.

For those who have traveled around Greece using public transportation, how easy was it? I know there are buses, ferries, taxis, and domestic flights, but I’m wondering how practical they are once you get outside the main tourist areas. Did you ever feel limited by not having a car?
