I am trying to learn more about Greek history. This is a family project! What I am learning about now is Greece's involvement in WWI. From what I've gathered, Greece had a rather complex and interesting stance during World War I, but I'm looking for more in-depth information.

Could anyone here provide insights or point me towards resources that detail:

  1. Greece's political climate leading up to its involvement in WWI.
  2. The significance of the National Schism and how it affected Greece's participation.
  3. Key battles or military campaigns that Greek forces were involved in.

I have a recommendation of some books you can read:
  • "The Battle of Crete: The History of the Battle that Ensured Nazi Germany's Defeat in Greece" by Charles River Editors.
  • "Inside Hitler's Greece: The Experience of Occupation, 1941-44" by Mark Mazower.
  • "The Cretan Runner: His Story of the German Occupation" by George Psychoundakis.
  • "Greece, 1941-1949: From Resistance to Civil War" by Eleni Fourtouni.
These give a pretty good overview!

Battle of Marathon - It's Marathon Season!

With all the excitement around marathon season, I’ve been thinking about the original marathon — the legendary run from the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE. I know the basics: a messenger ran from the battlefield to Athens to announce victory over the Persians… but how accurate is that story, really?

I’d love to learn more about the actual Battle of Marathon. Why was it such a big deal in Greek history? How did the Greeks manage to defeat the much larger Persian army? And how did it end up inspiring the modern marathon race?

If anyone here is into ancient history (or just loves epic military strategies), I’d really appreciate any insights or reading suggestions.

Kingdoms in Ancient Greece?

My niece has a school project about Ancient Greece, and she asked me an interesting question: were there kingdoms in Ancient Greece? I always associate Greece with city-states like Athens and Sparta, but I’m wondering if there were any actual kingdoms during that time.

Did Ancient Greece ever have kings ruling over larger territories, or was it mostly independent city-states? I’ve heard of Mycenae and the Minoans—were they considered kingdoms? And how do they compare to the more famous city-states of the Classical period?

If anyone has insights or resources that could help me explain this to her in a simple way, I’d really appreciate it. She's 11 years old and she chose this topic herself.

I’m planning a trip to Greece and want to explore the country’s rich Olympic history and important historical sites. Before I go, I’d love to learn more about how the ancient Olympic Games shaped Greek culture and which locations are a must-visit.

I'm fascinated by ancient naval warfare, and I've been diving deep into the Battle of Salamis (480 BC) between the Greeks and Persians. The way the smaller, outnumbered Greek fleet managed to outmaneuver the Persians is just incredible! I'd love to hear more insights into the naval strategies used by Themistocles and how the geography of the straits played a role in the battle's outcome. Was it purely the tactical advantage of the terrain, or did Greek ship design also give them an edge? Oracle of Delphi an Historical Figure?

I’ve been reading a lot about ancient Greek history lately, and I’m fascinated by the stories surrounding the Oracle of Delphi. From what I understand, the Oracle played a significant role in advising leaders and shaping the course of events in the ancient world. However, I’m a bit confused about whether the Oracle of Delphi was a specific historical figure or more of a title held by different priestesses over time.

Was there a single, renowned Oracle, or was it a succession of women who served in this role? How much of what we know is based on historical facts versus mythology? If anyone has more detailed information or can recommend sources on the history and function of the Oracle, I’d love to learn more!
