I have been researching places on mainland Greece to visit from Athens and I definitely want to make sure I see Delphi. This site has always fascinated me. Do you guys have any advice? I am not opposed to staying in Delphi for a night or two if it helps me better experience the place. I don't have to necessarily stay in Athens the whole time, that is just where my trip will be starting. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks so much!

My advice? Go! No matter what. I went in winter, a bit cool but not crowded and the most beautiful ethereal place on earth. For me it was like an experience in another world. It was well over 30 years ago when I went, and it still stirs up same emotions in me.

Arachova is a nearby town you might want to consider an overnight visit.

Plan to stay an overnight. It's about a 3 hr drive from Athens so a one-day trip is out of the question. There is a very nice hotel, NIDIMOS in Delphi just at the bottom of the hill on the right in Delphi, when coming from Arachova. There is a really nice restaurant "Patriko" across the street from the hotel. When we were there about 5 years ago the rate was 35E per night. Had a nice breakfast also.

Delphi is about 2.5 hours drive from the centre of Athens. If I was you I would drive to Itea (20 minutes drive) have lunch on the waterfront and stay the night in Itea. There are several hotels there, I have stayed in Nafsika palace but there are others there.
Depending where you want to go next you can drive to Antirio the across to Rio, you don't have to go back to Athens.

I have never been to Delphi and after reading this, I think I will make it a point to see it! It seems like one of those things I should make it a point to see one of these days.

Thank you everyone for the advice - this is so helpful!

I took a one-day trip to Delphi years ago. It was a bit of a drive, but not 3 hours, it was a guided tour, bus left in morning and returned by early evening after a stop for lunch. It was winter, very cold, the air was very thin and it was the most wonderful beautiful amazing enthralling place I have ever visited.

This seems like a great option for doing it. Taking a guided tour/ day trip can eliminate some of the hassle and maybe I don't want to stay overnight...

Best food towns to visit in Greece?

I’ve started realizing that some of my favorite memories from Greece are connected to food more than anything else. Little tavernas, bakeries, seafood by the water, village meals that seemed simple but tasted incredible. It’s making me think that next time I go to Greece, I’d love to plan at least part of the trip around food.

I’m not fully sure yet if I’ll be going this summer, but I’ve been daydreaming about possible places to visit. What towns or regions in Greece do you think are especially great for food lovers?

I’d love recommendations for places known for traditional cooking, local specialties, seafood, baked goods, or just amazing tavernas in general. Islands, mainland towns, mountain villages — all recommendations are welcome.

Would especially love hearing about places that felt authentic and memorable rather than overly touristy.

First Time Tips to Greece

I've been fortunate enough to visit Greece quite a few times over the years, and recently a friend asked me for advice before their very first trip. It surprised me how difficult it was to answer!

Once you've traveled somewhere often, you start taking a lot of things for granted. I'm not sure what the most helpful tips would be for someone experiencing Greece for the first time.

If you were helping a first-time visitor, what advice would you give? I'm thinking about practical things, cultural etiquette, transportation, money, restaurants, pacing an itinerary, or even little things you wish someone had told you before your first visit.

What are the biggest mistakes first-time visitors make, and what are some experiences you think every newcomer should have? I'd love to pass along some advice from people with firsthand experience.

Favorite small towns in Greece?

I realized recently that some of my favorite places in Greece haven’t actually been the major destinations everyone talks about, but smaller towns that just had a completely different atmosphere to them.

Sometimes it’s a mountain village with one main square and old stone houses, other times it’s a tiny coastal town where everyone seems to know each other and life moves slower. A few of the places I still think about most weren’t even places I had originally planned to visit.

I’m curious what small towns or villages have really stayed with people after traveling in Greece. Could be because of the scenery, the food, the people, the history, or just the overall feeling of the place.

Would love to hear everyone’s favorites, especially places that don’t always make the typical travel lists.

Best Way to Get a Car Service to JFK Airport Before a Flight to Greece?

Hi everyone, I'm flying out of JFK next month for a trip to Greece and trying to figure out the best way to get to the airport without the usual stress. My flight leaves early in the morning, and I don't want to deal with parking for two weeks or ask a family member to drive me at 4 a.m. I've been looking into booking a car service to JFK Airport instead of a rideshare, mainly because international flights need more buffer time, and I'd rather have a proper chauffeur waiting curbside than risk a driver cancelling at the last minute with all my luggage in tow. A friend of mine recently used Blue Nile Livery for a JFK run and said her chauffeur showed up early, helped load the bags, and tracked the flight the whole way, so she suggested I try them for this trip too.
I'm still trying to figure out whether it's worth booking the chauffeur service a few days in advance or if that's overkill for a domestic pickup, whether a sedan is fine or if an SUV is smarter given how much luggage most of us end up hauling back and forth to Greece, and if anyone has had a chauffeur reroute or adjust pickup timing because of a flight delay before an international departure. For those of you who fly out of JFK often for trips back to Greece, what's worked best for you, and is there a chauffeur service you'd genuinely recommend for an early morning run like this? Any tips appreciated!

Is Island Hopping Worth the Effort?

I've been thinking about trying an island-hopping trip the next time I visit Greece, but I'm wondering if it's actually worth the extra planning and travel time. In the past I've usually picked one island and stayed there for the duration of my vacation, which has been relaxing and let me really get to know the area.

Part of me loves the idea of experiencing several islands in one trip since they each seem to have their own personality, food, scenery, and traditions. On the other hand, I wonder if constantly packing, catching ferries, and checking into new accommodations takes away from the experience.

For those of you who have island-hopped, did you feel it was worth it? How many islands did you visit, and did you wish you had spent more time in fewer places? I'd love to hear your itineraries, tips, and whether you'd do it the same way again.
