Visiting Temple of Poseidon

I will be in Athens and I want too spend some time at the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio.

We will be staying near (or in) Glyfada - I forget where.

I was told you just need to take a taxi or something? I won't be renting a car and plan to just take the metro and taxis while in the city. It won't be long, then I am moving on.
 
Th temple is a worthwhile site to see, especially at sunset. We usually rent a car for the trip, but I’m sure you could charter a taxi. We are just west of you in Alimos. I would plan to leave about two hours before to sunset as entrance to the temple closes 20 min prior to sunset. Find a spot to sit until the sun sets. It is quite magical.

On your way back home consider stopping at Aperando Galazio in Vari. The tables are on the beach and they specialize in grilled fish.
 
I agree, definitely spend some time at that temple. The next time I go, I will be sure to stop in on Aperando Galazio in Vari.... it sounds like an amazing place!

First-time impressions of Athens

I’m in the early stages of planning an upcoming trip to Athens, and it made me realize something a little funny. It’s been a very long time since it was my first time there.

Every time I go now, I tend to fall into the same rhythm: familiar neighborhoods, favorite walks, the same cafés and viewpoints. I love Athens, but I’d really like to experience it again through fresh eyes instead of repeating my usual routine.

For those of you who remember your first visit, what were your initial impressions of Athens? What surprised you, in a good or bad way? Was it the energy, the mix of ancient and modern, the pace of daily life, or something completely unexpected?

And for anyone who’s helped a first-time visitor plan a trip, what parts of Athens seemed to leave the strongest impression on them?

Is the area near Syntagma a convenient place to stay?

I may be taking a last-minute trip to Athens sometime in September or October, and I’m starting to look at hotel options. I keep seeing places near Syntagma Square, and I’m wondering whether that is a convenient area to stay.

I like the idea of being central and able to walk to a lot of the main sights, restaurants, and neighborhoods, but I also don’t want to stay somewhere that feels overly busy or touristy all the time. How easy is it to get around from Syntagma, especially to places like Plaka, Monastiraki, the Acropolis, and other parts of central Athens?

I’d also love to know what the area feels like in the evenings. Is it a good choice for someone who wants convenience and walkability, or would you recommend staying in a nearby neighborhood instead?

Any hotel-area suggestions would be appreciated too.

Best Athens Restaurants with Acropolis Views?

I’ve been to Athens many times over the years, but one thing I never get tired of is a great meal paired with an Acropolis view. I’ve already been to a few of the classic spots, but for my next trip I’d love to branch out and try something new, maybe somewhere a little unexpected, or a place locals actually enjoy as much as visitors.

I’m open to anything: modern Greek, traditional tavernas, rooftop bars with small plates, or even hotels with great terraces that allow non-guests. What are your favorite restaurants in Athens with Acropolis views?

Is it worth spending time in Athens in August?

I’m starting to plan a trip to Greece, but the only month I’m really able to travel this year is August. I know that’s peak season for a lot of the islands, but I’ve heard mixed things about Athens in August.

Some people have told me the city can feel pretty quiet because many Athenians leave for their villages or the islands during that time. Others say it’s still lively because of tourism. I’m trying to figure out whether it’s worth spending a few days there before heading to another part of Greece for a Panagia festival we want to attend.

Athens is such an important city historically and culturally that I don’t want to skip it if it’s still enjoyable. On the other hand, if a lot of places are closed or the city feels half-empty, maybe it makes more sense to focus our time elsewhere?

Is renting a car necessary in Athens?

I’m planning to spend a few days in Athens this summer before heading off to the islands, and I’m trying to decide whether renting a car is actually necessary while I’m there.

Part of me likes the flexibility of having a car, especially if I want to explore beyond the main historic center. On the other hand, I’ve heard traffic can be intense, parking is limited, and public transportation is fairly easy to use for the major sites.

My plan is to see the Acropolis, wander neighborhoods like Plaka and Koukaki, enjoy some good food, and maybe do one day trip if time allows. After that, I’ll be taking a ferry.

For those who’ve spent a few days in Athens, did you rent a car or rely on walking, taxis, and public transport? Was having a car helpful, or more of a hassle than it was worth? I’d appreciate honest advice.
