I'm thinking of renting a boat to travel around the island and the nearby waters. Which port is it best to leave from? Does it make a difference?

I have no idea which is better, as I've never done either. I found this thread on Tripadvisor where people are talking about it. Maybe this can help?

That depends on where you want to go with the boat. If you want to go towards Agia Efimia or Antisamos then Sami will suit. From Poros you can go towards Skala or towards Sami, there are a couple small beaches, like koutsoupia but be warned wasps can be a problem on or close to the beach. If you head from Poros towards Sami there are beaches there as well.

Do you know which is nicer? In your opinion

If you are asking me which is nicer to stay at, they are both busy commercial ports. Poros would be slightly better because at least half of the beach on the northern side of the river ( creek in summer) is away from the busy port.
In my opinion it is much nicer to stay in Skala or Agia Efimia. You have to visit lake Melisani in Sami.

Thank you so much!! I hate it when the beach is basically connected to the limani

Poros is ok then on the northern part but don't expect to find sand on the beach, it is all pebble of varying sizes but not overly busy.
I would suggest Skala a much better option, again pebble beach but much smaller pebbles, the beach is much busier, more upmarket places to stay and lots more as well. Prices reflect that of course. If you stay in Skala and you have a car, you can rent them everywhere in the island, Mounda beach is close by and there you will find sand and not as busy as Skala. Depending on the time of the year you there you may get lucky and see baby turtles hatching and heading for the water.

I agree, Skala is the best for sure :)

Pay attention between Poros, the city of Kefalonia, and the island Poros of the Argo-Saronic group! :)

Traveling to Kefalonia in the Summer

Now that the holidays are behind me, I am starting to think about traveling to Greece in 2023. I want to visit a place I never have before, and I am thinking that Kefalonia might be a great place to explore. I would like to be on the island during when the sea turtles are on the beaches laying there eggs - I always loved wildlife and it seems fascinating. How long in the season? It is maybe a month? If so, would it make sense to visit in June?

So, I want to go to Greece in the summer so I can spend a lot of time on the beach. I know, I can go throughout the summer and into at least the early fall and still have great beach weather, but June works out the best for my schedule and I love taking a vacation around that time.

Besides the turtles and beaches, what else do you guys recommend?

Information about caving at Melissani Cave

I'm thinking of visiting Melissani Cave over the summer when I am in Kefalonia. I thought I'd share some information I found about it:

Melissani Cave is a hidden gem of Kefalonia, a Greek island situated in the heart of the Ionian Sea. This naturally occurring underground wonder was discovered only in 1951 after an earthquake's destruction revealed its existence. The entrance of the cave is camouflaged by dense forest, which makes entering the cave feel like an adventure on its own. Once inside, the view of the water is nothing short of breathtaking.

Due to the wide gaps in the cave's ceiling, sunlight floods in, giving the illusion of an emerald turquoise color. Such stunning natural beauty is hard to come by, and the Melissani Cave is the perfect venue for adventurers who want to experience something different.

Melissani Cave is home to a network of underground waterways that lead to the beautiful Melissani Lake. The lake's crystal clear water is naturally heated and is perfect for a refreshing dip, but before you jump in, please heed the safety guidelines and adhere to the do's and don'ts. The atmosphere in the cave is wet and humid, contributing to the growth of exotic plants and animals. It's an excellent opportunity to see different kinds of wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled for bats, snails, and eels.

The cave's interior is relatively spacious, so feel free to enjoy a leisurely stroll, savoring the beauty of the rock formations that have been formed over millions of years. This breath-taking scenery is the perfect background for some epic photos to share with your friends back home.

Immersing yourself in the cave's mystical ambiance is an experience like no other. We recommend that you go on a guided tour with experienced caving professionals who can provide you with interesting information about the cave's geological history, making your exploration more meaningful and memorable. The guided tour is equally safe and allows you to bask in the cave's ambiance thoroughly. Corrosion caves, such as the Melissani Cave, require a cautious approach to protect yourself and the cave's ecosystem. So, remember to go with a professional guide even if you have experience in caving/speleology.

Making Christopsomo- Christmas Bread

I will be traveling to Greece this Christmas and I want to make some Christopsomo to give to my family when I go. I have never made it and want to run something by you - do these ingredients look right? It looks very similar to tsoureki to me but with a lot of spices. I am also nervous there's too much flour in the recipe.

- 8 cups or so of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 package of dry yeast
- 1 1/2 tsp of salt
- 1 cup of warm water
- 1 cup of milk
- 1/2 tsp of cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp of nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp of ground cloves
- 1/2 cup of honey

Caves and Lake in Kephalonia

I saw some photos of the caves in Kephalonia and there's a lake near one of them, too. I think the cave is called Drograti and the lake is Melissani. I got the impression they were close to each other? Are they?

I would love to visit both - seems like such a natural and beautiful place. I don't want it to be busy when I go - what is a good time of year to visit? Do you have any tips?

Good Kefalonia Beaches for Late Summer?

I am headed to Kefalonia in late summer - August/September. I am wondering which beaches are best this time of year? I heard that these beaches were good - Myrtos Beach, Antisamos Beach, and Skala Beach. Are any of these good at that time of year?
