It has been a while since I went to Greece in September, and when I went, it was in late September. This time, I will be going earlier in the month. I will be flying into Athens from Toronto, so I will be pretty jet lagged once I arrive.

I am not sure how long I want to stay in Athens. It seems that, in the past, I haven't gotten too far past the Athens area and I kind of want to change it. These days, most of the people I am visiting are in the Athens area so I will be spending a lot of time at their homes, staying with people, etc.

Meanwhile I want to see something else. I have a few days - maybe 5 nights or so - to spend somewhere else, and I want to pick a spot and stay there. Do you have any recommendations? I know that is vague - I want to have some nice, relaxing beach time, and I am not too concerned about whether or not there are crowds or plenty to do. I want beaches and great places to eat (easy in Greece!).

Chania, Crete would be a perfect match in late September.

I agree with this! It's gorgeous, and the weather stays warm and beautiful through October.

September is a great time! If you’re in Crete, rent a car from https://www.cretarent.gr. Weather’s still good and having a car gives so much freedom to explore.

What does contemporary fine dining look like in Greece?

I’m planning a trip to Greece and, while I love traditional Greek food, I’m also curious about the modern fine dining scene. I know Greece has a deep culinary heritage, but I’ve heard that some chefs are taking classic flavors and giving them a contemporary twist.

For those who have experienced it, what does fine dining in Greece look like today? Are there any standout restaurants or chefs redefining Greek cuisine? Is it more focused on Michelin-starred establishments, or are there also smaller, innovative spots worth checking out?

I’m particularly interested in tasting dishes that blend tradition with modern techniques, maybe something with a creative take on seafood, local ingredients, or Greek wines. Any recommendations for restaurants in Athens, Thessaloniki, or the islands?

Would love to hear about your experiences and must-try dishes! Thanks in advance.

Tips for Exploring Mainland Greece by Car?

I’m of Greek descent and have visited Greece many times, but I’ve always stayed in one place or traveled by bus and ferry. This year, I’m thinking of doing something different, renting a car and exploring the mainland! I’d love any tips or advice from those who’ve done it before.

Are the roads easy to navigate? What areas are especially worth driving through—Peloponnese, Zagori, Meteora? I’m hoping to see some smaller villages, mountains, and historical sites I wouldn’t reach otherwise.

Is it better to rent in Athens and drive out, or start from a smaller city? How’s parking in towns? I’m also a little nervous about signage and rural driving.

Would really appreciate any recommendations on routes, stops, or driving tips in general. I want this trip to feel both adventurous but I don't want to feel stressed. I heard driving in Greece could be stressful.

Seeing an Ancient Greek Play while in Greece?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to Greece and would love to see an ancient Greek play while I’m there—something staged in an open-air ancient theater, like Epidaurus or even Herodes Atticus in Athens. It’s been a dream of mine to experience a classic tragedy or comedy under the stars in the kind of venue it was originally performed in.

I was wondering if anyone has tips for how to plan for this. Do these performances only happen during certain months or festivals? Do I need to buy tickets far in advance? Also, are the plays typically performed in modern or ancient Greek—and is it still enjoyable if you don’t speak fluent Greek?

Any advice on what to bring, where to sit, or how to make the most of the experience would be amazing. I’d really appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences. Thanks!

Best Places in Greece to Visit in May or September?

I love to travel to Greece in May and September. They're beautiful months that have great weather and decreased crowds. I'd love your recommendations.

I’m open to anything—mainland gems, lesser-known islands, cultural hotspots, foodie towns, or places with beautiful nature. I’ve been to Athens and Santorini already, so I’d love to explore somewhere new that really shines in spring or early fall.

Do you find the beaches still swimmable in late September? And are most restaurants, tavernas, and attractions still open then? What about May—does everything feel “awake,” or is it still quiet?

Getting Money from ATMs in Greece?

I have a friend who just came back from Greece and she told me she had issues using the ATM machines.

I have never had a problem, but I am curious as to what is going on.

Does anyone know why her ATM card, which works int he US, might not have worked in Greece? It is making me wonder if I need to also do something with my bank before I go to Greece again.

She said the machine kept giving her an error that said it wouldn't work because the card wasn't hooked up to a savings account?
