What to do in Kefalonia with family?

I'm currently planning a family trip to the stunning island of Kefalonia and would love your insights. We're a large family and we're all going. My sister has two kids - one is 12 and the other is 9. We are also traveling with my parents.

From our initial research, we know that Kefalonia boasts beautiful beaches, fascinating caves, and picturesque villages. However, we want to ensure our trip is as memorable for our children as it is for us.

Could anyone recommend:
  • Family-friendly beaches with shallow waters and fun activities?
  • Cultural or historical sites that are engaging for children?
  • Places to see wildlife or participate in outdoor adventures suitable for young ones?
  • Any local eateries that are great for families, perhaps with play areas or menus catered to kids?
We're also open to any tips on getting around the island with children, as we're debating between renting a car or relying on public transport.

I unfortunately have never been to Kefalonia. Hopefully someone will chime in. Meanwhile, I found this video!

 
Myrtos and Antisamos are great for kids who like calm, shallow water, and the Melissani Cave boat ride is usually a hit. Fiskardo is fun for a slow wander and an easy lunch by the harbor. If the kids need to burn energy back at your place, I’ve brought a small portable trampoline on trips before, which helped keep everyone entertained between outings.

Best Tavernas with Sea Views on Kefalonia

One of the things I always look forward to when traveling in Greece is finding a taverna with a beautiful sea view. There’s just something about sitting outside, looking out over the water, and enjoying a long meal that makes the whole experience feel even more memorable.

I’m hoping to spend some time on Kefalonia and would love to hear your recommendations for tavernas where the view is part of the experience. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy—sometimes the simple places end up being the best—but a great setting overlooking the sea is always a bonus.

Whether it’s a spot above a beach, a harborfront table, or a hillside taverna looking out over the Ionian, I’d love to hear about it.

Which tavernas on Kefalonia have the best sea views while you’re enjoying your meal? Any favorites that really stand out?

Unique Historical Sites of Kefalonia to Visit?

I’m starting to plan a trip to Kefalonia and would love some input, especially from a history perspective. I’ve been to Greece quite a few times and have visited a lot of the more well-known historical sites on other islands and the mainland, but somehow I’ve never made it to Kefalonia.

I know it’s not always talked about in the same way as places like Crete or Rhodes when it comes to history, but I’m assuming there are still some really interesting spots to explore. I’ve come across mentions of the Monastery of Saint Gerasimos and a few Venetian-era sites, but I’m sure there’s more I’m missing.

Are there any lesser-known ruins, monasteries, or historic villages that are especially worth seeing? I’m particularly interested in places that have a strong sense of story or local significance.

What does Kefalonia look like in spring?

I’m thinking about planning a trip to Kefalonia, and I keep wondering what the island is like in spring. I’ve only seen photos from summer, when the beaches are packed and the hills look golden and dry, but I’ve heard that spring is a completely different experience.

If you’ve been there in April or May, I’d love to hear what it’s like! Is the landscape really as green and full of wildflowers as some people say? Are the hills and olive groves especially lush that time of year? I’m also curious if the weather is warm enough to enjoy the beaches or if it’s more of a hiking and exploring season.

Are most tavernas and shops open, or does it still feel sleepy before summer kicks in? I haven’t booked anything yet, so I’d love to know if spring is a magical time to go or if summer is better.

Driving Advice in Kefalonia?

I’m of Greek descent and visit Greece almost every year, so I’m no stranger to renting a car and getting around. but I’ve never driven in Kefalonia before. I’m thinking about making the trip next summer, though it’s not 100% decided yet, and I’m wondering what to expect.

I’ve heard that Kefalonia has some narrow, winding mountain roads, especially around Myrtos Beach and heading toward Assos. Is it really challenging to drive there, or is it manageable if you take it slow? How are the road conditions overall? Are there plenty of signs in English as well as Greek?

Also, what’s parking like in popular areas such as Fiskardo, Argostoli, and near the major beaches? I’m used to village driving on the mainland, but islands can be different.

Information Comparing Kefalonia vs. Other Ionian Islands

I’m planning a trip to Greece and currently weighing Kefalonia against some of the other Ionian Islands, and I’d love to hear from people who’ve visited more than one.

I’m trying to understand how Kefalonia compares in terms of overall feel, things like pace, scenery, beaches, towns, and how easy it is to get around. Is it quieter or more spread out than places like Corfu or Zakynthos? Does it feel more relaxed, or just less built up? I’m also curious about food, crowds, and whether Kefalonia feels better suited for exploring by car versus staying mostly in one area.

I’m not looking for a “best island” answer, just real comparisons from experience. What made you choose one Ionian island over another, and did it match what you were hoping for?
