Has anyone climbed Mount Ainos? I would love to take on the challenge but I'm a little out of shape LOL. How difficult is it?

You're in luck! You can drive some of the way and walk the rest because there is a highway that passes through the mountain. So you only have to walk as much as you want.

Short answer: yes! I wouldn't recommend it if you're not used to difficult hikes

Hiking in Greece is challenging - often a lot more challenging than it would first appear. The main issue is fluid intake. The climate is so dry, you need A LOT more water than you think. Hikers are often unprepared and need to be rescued. I would say, unless you have a lot of technical experience hiking in different conditions and know how to be fully prepared for a hike, I wouldn't do it. However, it sounds like there are options to make this hike easier, which sound like they're worth exploring.

Always wanted to see the turtles in Kefalonia...

I have a bucket list of going to Kefalonia while the turtles are on the beaches. I love turtles and this seems like a really beautiful thing.

I found this video that talks about them. It's not quite seeing them in person, but it was informative. Thought I'd share:

Kefalonia hiking trails information

I've recently ventured into the breathtaking landscapes of Kefalonia, Greece, and I'm excited to share some insights and hopefully gather some from you as well. Kefalonia is not just a paradise for those seeking sun and sea; it's also a haven for hikers looking to explore nature's marvels on foot.

Myrtos Beach to Assos: This trail offers panoramic views of the famous Myrtos Beach, leading you to the quaint village of Assos. The path might be challenging, but the views are incredibly rewarding. The hike is a fantastic way to experience the island’s natural beauty and take in the serene atmosphere of Assos.

Mount Ainos: For those looking to conquer heights, Mount Ainos is the highest peak on the island. The national park offers various trails with different difficulty levels, each leading you through a unique landscape of Kefalonian fir trees and offering stunning views of the Ionian Sea. It's a must for anyone wanting to experience Kefalonia's diverse flora and fauna.

Fiskardo to Dafnoudi Beach: This trail is perfect for a leisurely hike. Starting from the charming harbor of Fiskardo, the path takes you through ancient cypress and olive groves until you reach the secluded beach of Dafnoudi. Here, you can relax in the crystal-clear waters before heading back.

The Italian War Memorial: Located near Argostoli, this trail is not only a nature walk but also a historical journey. The path leads you to a memorial dedicated to the Italian Acqui Division, offering insights into the island’s past and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.

Ainos to Lourdas Beach: Starting from the slopes of Mount Ainos, this trail will take you through some of the most scenic routes on the island, ending at the beautiful Lourdas Beach. It’s a diverse hike, showcasing all the natural beauty Kefalonia has to offer.

I'm looking to explore more trails in Kefalonia and would love to hear your experiences or any hidden gems you've discovered on the island. Share your stories, tips, and any must-see spots for fellow hikers planning their next adventure in Kefalonia.

Did I Miss Turtle Season?

I have always wanted to see the turtles in Kefalonia. They come to the beach to lay eggs or something once a year or so, right? Did I miss it?

I Might have to wait until next year to do this. Does anyone have an advice?

I was originally planning to go n September, but I think if that is the case, I would have missed it?

Information about caving at Melissani Cave

I'm thinking of visiting Melissani Cave over the summer when I am in Kefalonia. I thought I'd share some information I found about it:

Melissani Cave is a hidden gem of Kefalonia, a Greek island situated in the heart of the Ionian Sea. This naturally occurring underground wonder was discovered only in 1951 after an earthquake's destruction revealed its existence. The entrance of the cave is camouflaged by dense forest, which makes entering the cave feel like an adventure on its own. Once inside, the view of the water is nothing short of breathtaking.

Due to the wide gaps in the cave's ceiling, sunlight floods in, giving the illusion of an emerald turquoise color. Such stunning natural beauty is hard to come by, and the Melissani Cave is the perfect venue for adventurers who want to experience something different.

Melissani Cave is home to a network of underground waterways that lead to the beautiful Melissani Lake. The lake's crystal clear water is naturally heated and is perfect for a refreshing dip, but before you jump in, please heed the safety guidelines and adhere to the do's and don'ts. The atmosphere in the cave is wet and humid, contributing to the growth of exotic plants and animals. It's an excellent opportunity to see different kinds of wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled for bats, snails, and eels.

The cave's interior is relatively spacious, so feel free to enjoy a leisurely stroll, savoring the beauty of the rock formations that have been formed over millions of years. This breath-taking scenery is the perfect background for some epic photos to share with your friends back home.

Immersing yourself in the cave's mystical ambiance is an experience like no other. We recommend that you go on a guided tour with experienced caving professionals who can provide you with interesting information about the cave's geological history, making your exploration more meaningful and memorable. The guided tour is equally safe and allows you to bask in the cave's ambiance thoroughly. Corrosion caves, such as the Melissani Cave, require a cautious approach to protect yourself and the cave's ecosystem. So, remember to go with a professional guide even if you have experience in caving/speleology.

Visiting Lixouri in Kefalonia?

I am planing to go to Kefalonia and want to stay in a town that has a lot going on but maybe isn't so big and overwhelming. I researched and thought maybe Lixouri was a candidate?

This will be my first time on Kefalonia and I am interested in any tips you can give, such as:
  • What are the must-see attractions in and around Lixouri?
  • Can you suggest any hidden gems that a tourist might typically overlook?
  • What's the best way to get around the town and to nearby sites?
  • Any advice on local dining spots or unforgettable culinary experiences?
  • I'm also interested in outdoor activities — are there any particular hikes or natural wonders not to be missed?
  • Lastly, if you have any tips on cultural etiquette or local customs, I’d love to hear about them!
Thank you!
