I'm visiting Athens but I'd like to see what other smaller villages I can visit nearby to get the traditional Greek village vibe like the one in this picture that I took when I was in Crete. Where can you recommend?

My recommendation would be, rent a car, get a map (old school paper one, yes) and GPS if the car rental place has one available or use your phone (with a data plan) as a GPS and go exploring! My thought would be to plan day trips either going to a local beach, landmark, etc and stop along the way at a local taverna and explore from there.

These are some of the best day trips I have experienced while in Greece on the mainland :)

I agree with Nick, you should rent a car and explore the area. One of the coolest places nearby to go is the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion, which isn't that far from Athens depending on where in the city you are. You can also visit Glyfada, which is a nice beach community, and other villages near Glyfada, which are all charming.

Good Hotel or Rental Apartment Near Piraeus?

I'm planning a trip to Greece with a group of friends, and we're looking for accommodations near Piraeus Port. Our group has mixed plans: some will be island hopping, while others will stay around Athens. So, being close to the port would give us the flexibility we need.

We'll be in Greece for about 10 days, and we're open to both hotels and rental apartments. Key factors for us are:
  • Proximity to Piraeus Port for easy ferry access
  • Comfortable and clean accommodations
  • Options that can accommodate a group setting
If you've stayed in the area and have any recommendations or experiences to share, we'd greatly appreciate your insights!

Best Places in Athens to Photograph Ancient Sites?

I’ve been to Athens a handful of times now, but oddly enough, I’ve never really brought a proper camera. Just the occasional phone snap. Next time, I want to change that — I’m going all in with my gear and planning my trip around photography, especially ancient sites.

Obviously, the Acropolis is top of the list, but I’m wondering: what are the best vantage points to capture it — especially for sunset or night shots?

Are there quieter ruins that offer amazing shots without the crowds? I’m also looking for angles that give context, like city + ruins together.

How much time do you really need at the Acropolis?

It’s been several years since I last visited the Acropolis, and I’m trying to help some friends plan their first trip to Athens. I honestly can’t remember how long I spent there, I just remember being completely absorbed in everything and losing track of time!

They’re wondering how much time to set aside, and I don’t want to underestimate it. I know there’s the main climb, the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and all those sweeping views, plus time for photos and just soaking it all in.

Would you say two hours is enough for a relaxed visit, or does it really take closer to half a day if you include the museum or nearby sites? I’d love to hear what others recommend, especially those who’ve been recently, how long did it take you to see everything without feeling rushed?

Nighttime view of the Parthenon?

I’ll be in Athens soon and I’m especially excited to see the Parthenon lit up at night — I’ve heard it’s magical when it’s glowing above the city.

I’d love your tips on the best places to view it after dark. I’m open to rooftop bars, scenic streets, or quiet local spots where you can just sit and take it in. I’ve seen some photos from Lycabettus Hill and Filopappou, but I’m wondering what else people recommend — maybe somewhere less crowded?

Bonus if there’s a view with dinner or drinks involved, but I’m just as happy with a peaceful nighttime stroll and a clear view. I have been to Athens plenty of times - I just never really thought about where to go at night to have a great view.

Best Views of the Parthenon at Night?

Hey everyone! I’m heading to Athens soon and can’t wait to soak in the history—and the views. I’ve heard that the Parthenon is beautifully lit at night and I’d really love to catch some magical views of it after sunset.

Does anyone have favorite spots in the city for seeing the Parthenon at night? Are there rooftop bars or restaurants with great views that are actually worth the price? I’ve also heard about places like Philopappos Hill and Areopagus—are those safe and scenic after dark?

I’m hoping for something memorable and maybe even a little romantic—open to free viewpoints, paid spots, or any hidden gems. Bonus if it’s a good place to take photos too.

Appreciate any suggestions you might have! Can’t wait to experience Athens lit up under the stars. Thanks in advance for sharing your tips and favorite nighttime views!
