"It depends when you go but in August the traffic is horrendous. We stayed within walking distance of Mykonos town and have honestly never seen anything like it. From the airport and from the port traffic was gridlocked, the scooters whining round and beeping were constant, the injuries on people on the flight were numerous. Our hotel owner driving an extremely battered car thought it was hilarious when my husband (a police trained driver) was the front seat passenger and kept wincing at near misses, “braking” as if he were the driver and was relieved we made it to the hotel alive. No pavements, drink driving, horns, shouting,gesticulating, multiple people on the same scooter - it was mayhem. Early evening when all the poseurs came out was the worst. But that’s just our experience as parents trying to protect our children. I’ve no doubt other people free to zip around have a great time! It’s normal for Greece!

I think it is very funny???, especially about the Hotelier,I know which one,it is not appropriate to mention this here....Can you all imagine I had to work in these challenging circumstances? day in day out every day through out July and August......I had to plan meticulously when the ships arrive, when the Ferries docked, Cruise Liners anchored! ⚓ and came ashore, unbelievable congestion,.....I know all the short cuts and back streets, chasing in and out of lanes like a rally driver.... because my time was very precious as I had many responsibilities.....from 11am to 3 pm it is mayhem... oh how I wish I could work there all over again❤️❤️??..... Then we have horrendous motor bike accidents, especially with the Italians who just came to Party and get drunk all day every day......all good fun!??..

Is Mykonos Worth Visiting Outside of Peak Summer?

I’m curious to hear people’s experiences with Mykonos outside of peak summer. Most of what you see online focuses on July and August, crowded beaches, packed beach clubs, and very high prices, but I know some islands change completely once the main season ends.

For those who’ve visited Mykonos in the shoulder months or off-season, what was it actually like? Did the island feel calmer and more enjoyable, or too quiet and limited? I’m especially interested in how much is still open: restaurants, beaches, transportation, and boat trips.

How different does Mykonos Town feel when it’s not overflowing with visitors? And does the island’s character come through more once the party scene tones down? I heard it could be boring, but I guess it would depend on what we want.

What Should You See in Chora Besides the Windmills?

I might be going to Mykonos this fall, and if I do, I definitely want to spend some time exploring Chora. Of course, the windmills and Little Venice are the places everyone talks about, but I’m curious about what else is worth seeing while wandering around town.

Are there particular churches, small museums, neighborhoods, shops, or viewpoints that you think are easy to overlook? I’d especially love recommendations for places that feel a little more traditional or give you a better sense of Mykonos beyond the most photographed spots.

Since I may be visiting in the fall, I’m also wondering if Chora feels noticeably quieter then and whether that makes it easier to explore at a slower pace.

If you’ve spent time there, what were your favorite discoveries? I’d love to know what you think is worth seeking out besides the obvious landmarks.

Mykonos Okay to Visit in March?

A friend recently asked me whether Mykonos is a good place to visit in March, and I realized I don’t have a great answer, even though I’ve been there before. My experience with Mykonos has only been in the height of summer, when everything is open, busy, and very much in full swing.

I’m curious how the island feels in early spring. I assume it’s much quieter, but does that make it enjoyable or does it feel too closed down? Are restaurants, cafés, and shops still operating, even at a reduced level? Is it more of a peaceful, local experience, or does it feel like a place waiting for the season to start?

My friend isn’t necessarily looking for nightlife, but does want good food, nice walks, and a sense of atmosphere. I’d love to hear from anyone who has visited Mykonos in March—or lives there year-round—about what to realistically expect that time of year.

Staying in a villa rental on Mykonos?

We’re considering staying in a villa on Mykonos because our group is fairly large, and it seems like it might be more practical (and fun) than booking multiple hotel rooms. I’ve started looking online, but honestly the number of options is overwhelming, and I’m not sure what the best approach is.

For those who have done this before, how did you find your rental? Did you go through a villa agency, booking platforms, or local contacts? I’ve read that location makes a big difference depending on whether you want nightlife, beaches, or something quieter, so I’m also trying to figure out what areas make the most sense. If you’ve stayed in a Mykonos villa with a group, I’d love to hear what worked or what didn't work, as well.

Best Sunsets in Mykonos?

Much has been said about the sunsets in Santorini, and for the longest time I just assumed that was the place in Greece for sunset views. But recently, a friend came back from Mykonos and shared some absolutely gorgeous sunset photos, golden light over the water, soft colors, even the windmills in the background. I honestly had no idea Mykonos could look like that at sunset.

Now I’m curious if this is something people seek out there, or if it’s more of a hidden bonus compared to Santorini.

Do you have any favorite sunset spots on Mykonos? Are there specific beaches, viewpoints, or areas in town that really stand out? I’d love to hear recommendations before I start planning a trip.
